SAPPHIRE, N.C. - Sophomore Drew Imel closed the Hummingbird Intercollegiate with a second-round 75, securing a share of 23rd place in helping the Mastodons to a 17th place finish as a team.
Imel finished the tournament at 145 overall to finish at three-over in the highly-competitive event. John McMillen was the next Mastodon to check in, as he posted identical rounds of 77 to finish in a share for 79th place overall. His 154 put him at 12 overall in the event.
Senior Ryan Olbin finished third on the team and in a tie for 82nd place in Sapphire. He posted rounds of 76 and 79 to finish a stroke behind McMillen at 155 and 13-over.
Bruno Carvalho posted a 155 as well, posting a 79 today after a 76 in opening round action to share 82nd place with Olbin.
Tomaz Pinheiro rounded out the Mastodon scorers, as he closed the book on a 162 with an 82 today. He finished in 94th place in the tournament.
As a team, IPFW posted a second-round 310 after a 299 yesterday, sealing the outing in 17th place overall.
"Any time we can get in the two's [200 score as a team], it's where we want to be, but we've been fighting consistency all season long and it came up again today," said Head Coach Billy King. "We really need to work on our conditioning over the Winter and really focus on the mental aspects of the game to get ready for what we hope to accomplish in the Spring."
The Jacksonville Dolphins fired a 279 today to take the team title away from the Vanderbilt Commodores by six strokes. They closed the event at five-under as a team.
The individual medalist honor went to Vandy's Adam Hoffman, who fired rounds of 66 and 69 to win the tournament by two strokes.
The tournament wraps up the Fall portion of the Mastodon schedule. They will tee-off the 2011 half of the slate on March 11 as they travel to Orlando's Mission Inn Resort for the St. John's Red Flash Invitational.
