HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - In windy, brisk conditions at the Los Colinas Course of The Mission Inn Resort, it was Curtis Coverstone who stole the show as his even-par 72 led the Mastodons to a 300 team score in their first round of the 2011 Spring season.
Coverstone's 72, a new personal best, currently has the sophomore in striking distance in a tie for 4th place overall. Following Coverstone was Tomaz Pinheiro's three-over 75 and Drew Imel's 76. Pinheiro and Imel currently sit in 14th and 16th place, respectively.
Currently fourth among Mastodon scorers and 22nd overall, Bruno Carvalho fired a 77 as senior Ryan Olbin rounded out IPFW's lineup with an 81.
"We're happy and proud of how we started, but we're not quite satisfied," said Head Coach Billy King. "Curtis had a great round, but there's a lot of work to be done tomorrow to win this thing."
Competing as individuals, Mitch Bellam fired an 80 to finish in a tie for 42nd while fellow freshman Patrick Kundenreich shot an 81 to tie for 49th place. Adam Turney and Jon McMillen each carded an opening round 84 to finish in a tie for 64th while Jacob Bailey shot a 96 to finish in a tie for 78th overall.
As a team, the Mastodons are currently in 3rd place and trail leaders Stetson and Laval by three and two strokes, respectively.
Round two action of the St. John's Invitational will begin tomorrow (Mar. 12) with a final round Sunday (Mar. 13).
