Fort Wayne, IN - Junior guard Jeremy Mixon had a career-high 21 points and four Mastodons scored in double figures as IPFW hit the century mark in a 105-65 win over Judson University on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Coliseum.
Mixon was part of a scoring barrage that included a season-high 12 triples and 50.0% shooting from the field.
The Eagles (2-8) did a nice job of keeping the game close in the early going as junior guard Dion Thomas drilled a 3-pointer of his own to make it 18-15, IPFW with 12:16 remaining in the opening half.
But from that point IPFW caught fire. Junior forward Trey McCorkle started of a 23-3 run with a nice reverse layup inside. Then the 'Dons began to rain threes. Mixon hit one from well behind the NBA line, senior guard Ben Botts and junior guard Antwaun Boyd each found the bottom of the net from behind the arc, and for good measure Mixon stepped back and drilled another.
Redshirt sophomore guard Frank Gaines finished off the run by slashing hard to the basket for a layin.
IPFW hit seven first-half 3-pointers and took a 59-31 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, the Mastodons were never challenged. Junior forward Terrance Williams slammed home an alley-oop from Mixon to give the 'Dons a 92-51 lead, and they cruised to the 40-point win.
Along with Mixon's 21, IPFW got double-digit scoring from Botts and Gaines with 18 each. Gaines also grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Junior Jason Smeathers had his best outing as a Mastodon with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.
Jim Kuban and Deon Thomas led Judson with 13 points each. Thomas added 11 rebounds for a double-double of his own.
IPFW forced 23 Judson turnovers in the contest and outrebounded the Eagles, 43-32.
With the win, The Mastodons improve to 3-2. Next up for the 'Dons is Summit League play. IPFW will host UMKC on Thursday (12/2) and Southern Utah on Saturday (12/4).
