Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW overcame a 10-point second half deficit and made 12 of 14 free throws in overtime to win their Summit League opener over UMKC, 76-72 on Thursday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
IPFW never had a lead in the second half but chipped away slowly at the Kangaroos double-digit margin.
The Mastodons began to make their move with 7:03 left in regulation. Junior guard Jeremy Mixon found a seam in the Kangaroos defense and slashed to the basket for a layup cutting the UMKC lead to four at 51-47.
After trading some foul shots, UMKC would take a 55-50 lead on a bucket inside by senior forward Spencer Johnson.
But a clutch 3-pointer by senior guard Ben Botts put the Mastodons on the doorstep of a huge comeback.
Mixon would tie the game at 56 with a jumper from the left baseline with 1:20 left in the contest.
UMKC freshman forward Trinity Hall stepped up and hit a pair of pressure free throws to give the 'Roos a 58-56 lead with :49 to go, but junior forward Trey McCorkle finished off a great feed by junior forward John Peckinpaugh to tie it again and send the game into overtime.
For UMKC it was battle of attrition. They had four starters foul out late in the second half and in overtime, but never gave up. Unfortunately for the Kangaroos, the foul shooting trouble IPFW had in regulation went away in the extra session. IPFW was just 12-22 in the first two periods, but made 12-14 from the stripe in overtime to seal the win.
The Mastodons relied on balanced scoring in the game. Five 'Dons hit for double figures with Botts' 20 points leading the way. Sophomore guard Frank Gaines had 12 points and seven rebounds, McCorkle and Mixon each chipped in 11, while Peckinpaugh contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
UMKC (4-2, 0-1 SL) was led in scoring by Johnson with 19 points. He also had nine rebounds. Senior forward Jay Cousinard and Hall each had 13.
The Kangaroos, who shot 54.2% from the floor in the first half, ended the game at 38.6%. IPFW shot 57.9% in the second half and finished the contest hitting 46.8% of the attempts from the floor.
UMKC won the battle of the boards, 38-30.
With the win, IPFW improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Summit League play. They return to action on Saturday night, hosting Southern Utah (2-5, 0-1) who fell to Oakland, 81-65 on Thursday night in Rochester, Michigan. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Note: IPFW Head Men's Basketball Coach Dane Fife moves into second place all-time in coaching victories with 68, passing former Mastodon coach Tim Russell (67).
