Fort Wayne, IN - Senior guard Zach Plackemeier tossed in a game-high 19 points to lead five Mastodons in double figures as IPFW topped Southern Utah, 76-66 on Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
The Mastodons held the lead throughout most of the game, even though Southern Utah had a great shooting night. The Thunderbirds (2-6, 0-2 SL) hit on 58.7% of their shots from the floor.
In the first half, IPFW led by as many as nine as junior guard Jeremy Mixon drilled a 3-pointer and slashed to the basket for a layup.
SUU got a triple of their own from junior guard Jake Nielson and a jumper from junior guard Ray Jones, Jr. to draw back to within two at 34-32, but IPFW would lead by three at the break, 42-39.
The Thunderbirds made a push in the early stages of the second half, taking a three-point lead on another basket by Jones, but that would be the last time they would lead in the game.
An old-fashioned 3-point play by sophomore guard Frank Gaines and a triple by Plackemeier put the Mastodons up 50-47 with 14:31 left, and they wouldn't trail the rest of the way.
Back-to-back layups by junior forward Trey McCorkle and clutch foul shooting down the stretch by Plackemeier and senior guard Ben Botts sealed the IPFW 10-point win.
Along with Plackemeier's 19, IPFW got double-digit scoring from Botts (15), Gaines (12), McCorkle (11) and Mixon (10).
Even though they were outrebounded 15-7 in the first half, IPFW won the battle of the boards for the game, 34-30. The Mastodons also forced 16 T-Bird turnovers while giving up the ball themselves a season-low six times.
Ray Jones, Jr. was the leading scorer for Southern Utah with 15 points.
With the win, IPFW improves to 5-2 and 2-0 in Summit League play. It's the second time in IPFW's short four year history that they have begun 2-0 in conference play. They also beat UMKC and Southern Utah at the start of the 2007-08 campaign, IPFW's first in the League.
The Mastodons will now step out of conference play for the next four games. The 'Dons will return to action on Wednesday night, hosting Toledo in a 6:00 p.m. contest. It will be the front half of a double header. The IPFW women's basketball team will host the nightcap at 8:00 p.m. with visiting Valparaiso.
