Tulsa, OK - IPFW snapped a short two-game losing streak and won for the first time at the Mabee Center as senior guard Ben Botts' 20 points paced the Mastodons to a 76-73 win over Oral Roberts on Tuesday night in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The win moves IPFW to 3-0 in Summit League play. The first time the Mastodons have had that mark in the league in their fourth year of membership.
Oral Roberts (5-9, 2-1 SL) controlled the majority of the play in the first half. The Golden Eagles opened up a five-point lead on a 3-pointer by reserve guard Hunter McClintock.
The Mastodons got into some early foul trouble and had to get production from their bench. Junior guard Antwaun Boyd gave the 'Dons a spark with an old-fashioned three-point play and gave IPFW a 28-27 lead on a pair of free throws with 2:25 to go in the half.
IPFW went on a 5-0 run to finish the first session, punctuated by a triple by Botts. The 'Dons held a 33-28 cushion at the break.
In the second half, the Mastodons opened up a 12-point lead on a pair of three-balls by Botts and a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Brandon Gaines.
But the Golden Eagles put together a 12-2 run to pull to within two at 47-45. Junior forward Dominique Morrison closed out the run with a mid-range jumper.
IPFW responded by getting four straight points from junior guard Jeremy Mixon, and then Mixon put the 'Dons ahead 63-53 with a three-point play and a floating jumper in the paint.
The Mastodons would have to hold on down the stretch as ORU made one final run.
With just a minute left in regulation, Golden Eagles' sophomore forward Damen Bell-Holter scored inside cutting the 'Dons lead to just three at 74-71.
A pair of Morrison freebies drew ORU to within one, 74-73 with just :12 left.
Oral Roberts immediately fouled on the inbounds play sending Mixon to the line. Mixon sank both (he was 5-5 from the stripe).
ORU had one last chance, but Bell-Holters desperation three at the buzzer was well short giving IPFW its first win at the Mabee Center in four tries.
Along with Botts' 20-point effort, IPFW got 15 from Mixon and 14 from Frank Gaines.
Morrison led four ORU double-digit scorers with 24.
The Mastodons regained their shooting touch. IPFW hit on 50.0% of the attempts from the floor and were 17-20 from the foul line.
ORU shot 47.1% in the game but was just 3-18 from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles did outrebound IPFW, 33-26.
With the win, the Mastodons improve to 8-4 overall and remain in a first place tie in The Summit League at 3-0 with Oakland, who topped Centenary 98-71 at the Gold Dome.
IPFW will now travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to face the Centenary Gents (0-14, 0-3 SL). Game time on Thursday night is 8:00 p.m.
