Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW was able to overcome its second consecutive cold-shooting night on Monday evening, scoring seven of the final dozen points of the game to climb to 1-1 in Summit League play with a 60-58 victory over the UMKC Kangaroos.
IPFW (4-3, 1-1 Summit League) was led by Anne Boese who scored 13 points, while Sydney Weinert had 11 points and a career-high-tying 14 rebounds. Stephanie Rosado finished two rebounds shy of her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds, while adding a pair of blocked shots.
UMKC (3-6, 0-2 Summit) took an early 6-4 lead in the game before the Mastodons rattled off 16 consecutive points to lead 20-6 halfway through the opening period. IPFW saw its 14-point lead melt down to three on an old-fashioned three-point play late in the opening period before Boese sent the Mastodons to the locker room with a 29-25 lead by making one of two free throws with under a minute left in the period.
The Mastodons kept its lead for the majority of the half until the 8:26 mark of the second half when the Kangaroos jumped ahead by two at 49-47.
Two points would mark the largest lead by the 'Roos in the second half, as with the game tied at 53 apiece, the Mastodons scored the next four points, and never trailed again, holding off the strong UMKC squad late in the contest.
For the second consecutive game the Mastodons shot under 35 percent, making just 17-of-61 shots from the field (27.9 percent), while hitting just 3-of-15 (20.0 percent) from long range.
UMKC was led by Dayon Hall-Jones who scored 16 points, while LeAndrea Thomas scored 11. Kim Nezianya scored nine while pulling down 11 rebounds.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, December 8, when the squad plays host to the Crusaders of Valparaiso, with tip-off slated for 8:00 PM at the Memorial Coliseum.
