Morehead, KY - The Morehead State University Eagles jumped on IPFW with seven runs in the first inning, and never looked back, blasting the Mastodons 21-6 in the opener of a four-game series on Friday afternoon at Allen Field.
The Eagles got to IPFW starter Brandon Knowling from the opening batter. Knowling, who hadn't started a game in two years due to arm problems, gave up seven runs on six hits in the 1st inning. The big blow of the frame was a two-run homer by second baseman Travis Redmon.
MSU (9-11) got another in the second inning before IPFW got on the board in the fourth on a lead-off homer by first baseman A.J. Christensen. It was Christensen's third blast of the season.
IPFW made it 8-2 in the top of the 6th inning on a solo shot from junior designated hitter Brett Clark. It was his second homer of the season.
But any thoughts of a comeback were dashed as Morehead State put up five in the bottom of the sixth, four in the 7th inning and four in the 8th inning.
The Mastodons would get a three-run homer from Cody Galbraith in the top of the 8th inning, but it was too little, too late as the 'Dons fell by 15.
IPFW got their six runs on seven hits. MSU pounded out 21 hits on the afternoon. Catcher Taylor Davis and first baseman Michael Fear each had four hits and six RBI in the game.
Knowling took the loss (0-1). He gave up eight runs on nine hits in 1.2 innings. He walked one and struck out none.
Eagles' starter Jeff Arnold got the win (2-0). He gave up three runs on three hits over seven innings. He struck out three and walked none.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 1-14. The middle two games of the series will be played Saturday afternoon at Allen Field.
