Morehead, KY - IPFW had to work extra innings to earn a doubleheader split at Morehead State on Saturday afternoon at Allen Field. The Mastodons dropped Game 1, 15-6 but held on for a 9-8 win in Game 2.
In Game 2, IPFW took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning as senior third baseman Shaun VanDriessche drilled a leadoff homer to right center field. It was VanDriessche's first of the season and 21st of his career. He is just four shy of the IPFW all-time record.
But as they have all series, Morehead State came back to tie the game in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by left fielder Cameron Flynn.
The game remained tied at two until the top of the fifth. That is when center fielder Kurt Dudley connected off of MSU starter Quentin Morgan, sending a shot out of right field.
IPFW would get two more in the top of the 6th inning. With the bases loaded, Mastodon left fielder Garrett Segraves drew a walk. The 'Dons would get their second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Matt Keys.
Trailing 5-2, the Eagles (10-12) mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth. MSU got a bases clearing three-run double from shortstop Drew Lee to knot the game at five.
Neither team scored in the 7th inning, so the game would go to extras. IPFW struck in the top of the eighth. After loading the bases, second baseman Jordan Kohler forced a walk from Eagles' reliever Casey Branham to take a 6-5 lead.
But the 'Dons couldn't keep MSU off the board in the bottom of the inning as designated hitter Daniel Pugh came through in the clutch with an RBI single to center to send it to the ninth.
IPFW would score three times in the top of the 9th on RBI singles by pinch hitter Cody Galbraith and designated hitter Brett Clark. The Mastodons would need every one of those runs.
With two outs and a runner on third, MSU second baseman Travis Redmon would homer to right off of IPFW reliever Samuel Walker to make it 9-8. Walker would settle down and get center fielder J.D. Ashbrook to line out to Kohler at second to end the game.
Walker tossed 3.2 innings of relief for his first win of the year (1-3). MSU reliever Jake Helvey worked just two-thirds of an inning for the loss (0-1). He gave up two runs, one earned.
In game one of the twinbill, IPFW led 2-0 on a two-run blast by Dudley (the first of two on the day) and would lead 3-1 after and inning and a half, but it all came crashing down after that. MSU third baseman Andrew Deeds homered in a four-run second and Ashbrook homered in a four-run third as the Eagles blew open the game.
Ashbrook added a two-run shot in the 7th inning as the Eagles cruised to a 15-6 win.
IPFW starter Ryan August took the loss in Game 1 (0-4). He gave up 12 runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work. He walked seven while fanning two.
Morehead reliever Trey Smith got the win (1-2). He surrendered three runs, one earned, on just two hits over 5.0 innings. He walked four and struck out two.
With the split, IPFW stands at 2-15. The Mastodons and Eagles wrap up their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Allen Field.
