Little Rock, AR - The IPFW Mastodons were three outs away from their first win of the season on Saturday night at Gary Hogan Field, but Arkansas-Little Rock managed to tie the game in the 9th inning and win it in the 11th by the final of 6-5.
It was the fourth time this season that the Mastodons (0-8) have lost a one-run game. It was also their second extra-inning loss of the season.
The Trojans (9-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning as left fielder Bryce Killingsworth led off with a double and scored on one of IPFW's four errors in the game.
IPFW would tie the game at one in the top of the third. Centerfielder Kurt Dudley singled through the right side of the Trojan's infield. On the play, senior left fielder Joel Washko would score from second.
IPFW took a two-run lead in the top of the 4th inning on a two-run double by catcher Brendan Landwehr.
Trailing 3-1, UALR chipped away. They got one back in the fifth inning on an RBI single by catcher Landis Wilson.
The Trojans would tie the game an inning later on an RBI single by third baseman Casey McCollum and would take the lead in the 7th inning on a Wilson bunt single.
IPFW got the equalizer again in the top of the 8th as DH Brett Clark doubled to right center. That chased home Dudley who led off the inning with a single.
In the top of the 9th inning, the Mastodons would take a 5-4 lead. Head coach Bobby Pierce made a number of offensive substitutions and they worked to perfection. With two outs, pinch hitter Cody Galbraith doubled to right center. Pinch hitter Cory Miller then stepped to the plate and singled to center, scoring Galbraith.
Unfortunately, the 'Dons couldn't close it out in the ninth. UALR second baseman Jason Houston led off the inning by reaching on a two-base error. DH Jake Rowelll would bring him around with and RBI single down the right field line.
IPFW threatened to take the lead in the 11th as Jason Doerffler led off with a single and stole second. He was advanced to third on an infield out by Garrett Segraves, but was stranded there.
UALR would load the bases in the 11th on a pair of singles and a walk by IPFW reliever Matt Antos. With the sacks juiced, Pierce went to his bullpen. He brought on junior Ryan Jensen, but Jensen issued a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Cameron to end the game.
Antos was the tough luck loser (0-2). He tossed 3.1 innings of effective relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on just three hits. Antos struck out four and walked three.
UALR reliever J.R. Bowling got the win (1-1) pitching 1.1 innings of two-hit shutout ball. He fanned three and walked none.
Dudley went 3-5 in the contest. Washko and senior third baseman Shaun VanDriessche had two hits each.
Wilson was 3-4 with a pair of RBI for the Trojans.
IPFW and Arkansas-Little Rock will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Hogan Field.
