
Mastodons Finish Day One of Summit League Championship in Fifth Place

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Looking to finish the 2010 season on a positive note, the IPFW men's golf team fired a 36-hole total of 618 on the first day of the Summit League Tournament in St. George, Utah. The Mastodons sit in fifth place with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday.
After a disappointing finish in the 2009 conference championship, the `Dons are looking for a better outcome this season at the par 71, 6965-yard Entrada at Snow Cayon Golf Club.
With two rounds in the books, and one important 18-hole journey remaining, IPFW ends the first day one stroke ahead of sixth place South Dakota State, and 15 shots back of Southern Utah for fourth place.
Western Illinois heads into the final round as the tournament leader after firing a two-round total of 589.
The Mastodons were led by freshman Drew Imel, who fired rounds of 76-71 (+5) to end Monday tied for fifth place. Imel will seek a second-straight top-15 finish tomorrow, sitting four strokes back of the overall lead for medalist honors.
Mastodon veteran and senior, Jon Balyeat, played strong on the first day after managing scores of 77-78 (+13). He is tied for 22nd place overall.
First-year `Don Bruno Carvalho is tied for 30th place with rounds of 79-78 (+15) on Monday. Ryan Olbin is two strokes back of the freshman and is tied for 35th place after shooting round of 81-79 (+17). Jacob Bailey concluded the Mastodon scoring after posting two rounds in the 80s, 84-82 (+24). Bailey stands alone in 40th place overall in the 50-man field.
David Holtgrewe of Oral Roberts and Korbin Kuehm of UMKC are tied for medalist honors with a 143 total (+1).
The Summit League Championship will conclude tomorrow morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. MST.
