GREEN BAY, Wis. - A sub-300 team score, highlighted by a number of low rounds and personal bests, carried the IPFW men's golf team to a strong fourth place finish at the Green Bay Invitational.
Sophomore Drew Imel closed out his rock-solid three round total of 224 with a two-over 74, wrapping up his first top-10 finish of the season in eighth place. He finished just three strokes off of his personal three-round tournament low.
Tomaz Pinheiro was the story of day two, as he followed up his opening day totals of 72 and 84 with a two-under par 70, setting a new personal best 18-hole score for the second time in as many days. He also bettered his previous tournament low of 232 by six strokes, en route to his 13th place finish. Pinheiro's stellar round tied North Dakota's Nick Shaefer for the lowest round turned in by the 60 entrants.
Senior captain Ryan Olbin carded a final round 76 ( 4) to go with an 83 and a 76 in day one, finishing in a tie for 24th place.
Junior John McMillen placed 28th overall as he dropped strokes between each round, checking in with a 234 after rounds of 83, 76 and 75.
Bruno Carvalho, who fired rounds of 75 and 79 on day one, slipped a stroke back to 80 on the final day, sharing 28th place with McMillen at 234.
Jacob Bailey, competing as an individual in the event, closed out his tournament with a 79 to go along with previous rounds of 80 and 79, wrapping up in 34th place at 238.
Sophomore Curtis Coverstone, also playing as an individual, carded a final round 86 to close the tournament in 50th place at 252.
As a team, IPFW defeated five of six Division I opponents in the event, finishing fourth overall.
St. Ambrose University captured the tournament title with an 888 three-round team score. Lewis University, led by medalist Brandon White (72-75-73-220), checked in at second place, followed by fellow Chicagoland squad Loyola at 902 overall. IPFW's three-round total of 904 left them just two strokes behind cracking the top-three.
"We're pretty thrilled with our start to the season," said head coach Billy King. "I'm especially happy for Drew (Imel) and Tomaz (Pinheiro). They both had great summers and really worked hard for this and it's all starting to pay off. From here, we just need every kid to build consistency and get them to realize that they can be great day in and day out."
The 'Dons will return to action in two weeks at Bowling Green's John Piper Intercollegiate at Stone Ridge Golf Club. IPFW finished in 11th place overall in the event a season ago behind Imel's final round, one-over 73.
