Mastodons Swing to Eighth Place Finish at Dayton Flyer Invitational

KETTERING, Ohio - Led by juniors Drew Imel and Tomaz Pinheiro, the IPFW men's golf team finished in eighth place overall at the highly competitive Dayton Flyer Invitational in Kettering, Ohio, on Tuesday. The Mastodons posted a 299 team total on the final day, concluding the tournament with a 36-hole mark of 610.
Heading into Tuesday's final round looking to move up the leaderboard, IPFW ended the event where it began the day, finishing alone in eighth place. The 'Dons, however, did pick up quality rounds on the final day.
With a two-day total of 152, Imel and Pinheiro finished tied for 28th place overall, as each fired a two-over par 73 to go with rounds of 79 from Monday. After carding a 79 in round one, junior Bruno Carvalho improved five strokes on the final day with a 74. Carvalho ended the tournament tied for 34th place with a 153.
Freshman Eddie Tackett took a step back on day two after posting an 83 Tuesday, finishing tied for 49th place overall in the 94-player field with a 157 total. Classmate Jacob Groninger fared better in the final round by shooting a 79 to go with an 84 in round one. A two-day total of 173 jolted Groninger to a 74th place finish overall.
Sophomore Patrick Kundenreich competed as an individual the past two days, and finished tied with Tackett for 49th place with a 36-hole total of 157 (75-82).
Summit League member IUPUI won the overall team competition in a playoff to Dayton with a team mark of 585. Jaguar Michael Davan took medalist honors after firing a 36-hole total of 139 (71-69).
IPFW will conclude the fall campaign at the Western Carolina Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Cashiers, N.C. The two-day tournament begins Oct. 31.
