Box Score
VALPARAISO, Ind. - Stepping out of conference play to face a familiar Horizon League opponent, the IPFW men's soccer team fell behind early in the first half and couldn't recover against the up-tempo Valparaiso offense Tuesday evening, as the Mastodons fell 2-0 to the Crusaders at Brown Field in Valparaiso, Ind.
IPFW drops its second match in as many games with the road loss, moving its 2011 record to 6-8-1 (2-1-0 SL). With the home win, Valparaiso improves to 6-5-3 (2-0-1 HL) this season. The Crusaders are now 13-3 all-time against the Mastodons.
Before the 'Dons had time to adjust to the soggy field conditions, Valpo's Wei Ming Wong wasted no time scoring his second goal of the season in the 13th minute after netting a shot off a rebound into the IPFW box. The goal put the Crusaders ahead early, 1-0.
On the opposite sideline, IPFW's offense struggled to find open looks in the first period, not attempting a shot until the 21st minute. The 'Dons managed three first-half shots, but each try missed its target, including Max Touloute's 20-yard blast in the 26th minute, which was saved. Despite the 'Dons push, Valpo took the one-goal lead into halftime.
In the second frame, IPFW had trouble stringing together numerous scoring opportunities. The visitors totaled one shot the final half, while Valparaiso stepped up its attack and wasn't finished on the offensive end.
In the 77th minute, Crusader Todd Vervynckt put the game away with a shot from 25 yards out past the diving hands of IPFW goalkeeper Eric Fluck, providing Valpo a two-goal lead and ultimately, the 2-0 win.
Touloute fired three of IPFW's four shots in the contest, while Valparaiso blasted 24 attempts. Starting in goal for the first time this season, Fluck made a career-high seven saves.
The Mastodons will return to Summit League competition on Saturday, Oct. 22, when they square-off against in-state rival IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
