FORT WAYNE, Ind. - On Senior Day, the IPFW women's soccer team battled Oral Roberts to a 110-minute match to draw even, 1-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
With the tie, the 'Dons move to 5-9-1 and 2-4-1 in Summit League action while the Golden Eagles move to 6-9-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the league.
ORU came out strong early in the first half, recording four shots, with three on goal, in just the first 10 minutes.
Despite senior goalie Kristen McFadden tallying three saves early on, the Golden Eagles were able to get past the Mastodons in the 16th minute. ORU's Whitney Booth had a pass into the box to Whitney Brannon, who then was able to get past McFadden for the 1-0 lead.
However, the Mastodons picked up momentum while controlling the ball mostly in their half of the field and were able to get the equalizer right before the first half ended.
In the 42nd minute, IPFW sophomore Caroline Castelli received the ball off of junior Danielle Bishop's corner kick and had a pass back to Bishop, who was then able to slide past ORU's keeper Helen Erb for the 1-1 score.
In a very competitive second half, it was a lot of back and forth action for the two teams that saw the Mastodons outshoot the Golden Eagles, 11-6, and three yellow cards all occurred within a 15-minute time frame.
In the 29th minute of the second half, IPFW's junior Alaina Jones had a close shot that hit the post preventing the 2-1 lead. Just a couple of a minutes later, ORU tried to gain the lead when Booth had a shot that hit the crossbar.
IPFW continued to outshoot ORU in both overtimes, and when it came down to the last six seconds of the second overtime, it looked like the Mastodons got the win off of a header from junior Arianne Mason. However, the shot went slightly wide for the final score of 1-1.
The match was the final home match for eight IPFW seniors: Brittany Climmons, Shawna Follis, Justine LeBlanc, Lauren McCracken, Kristen McFadden, Tara O'Toole, Jessica Schein and Kateri Till.
McFadden played the full 110 minutes in goal while recording four saves.
IPFW outshot ORU, 27-12 while each team tallied five corner kicks. IPFW also led in fouls, 18-7, including two of the three yellow cards distributed.
Bishop recorded seven shots with four on goal, including IPFW's lone goal of the match, while Mason tallied seven shots with two on goal. Freshman Sydney Hoareau was right behind Bishop and Mason with five shots.
The Mastodons will return to action next weekend when they travel to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
