Fort Wayne, Ind. – On a chilly and rainy October night, the IPFW men's soccer team caught fire with three second-half goals to salvage a 3-3 tie against UMKC Wednesday evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex in Fort Wayne, Ind.
With the draw, IPFW remains in the hunt for a Summit League Tournament berth with just one conference game left this fall, moving its 2011 overall record to 6-9-2 (2-2-1). UMKC also stays in the tournament chase with a 5-7-3 (2-1-2) season mark. In six total matches between the two programs, IPFW is now 1-4-1 all-time against UMKC.
In an up-tempo first half, the Mastodons pushed the ball early into Kangaroo territory, as the 'Dons attempted four of the game's first five shots. Despite the push, UMKC reached the scoreboard in the 12th minute, when Jordan Rideout netted a goal off his own rebound to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. UMKC held the one-goal lead into halftime.
When the teams returned from the break, IPFW stormed back with their first goal of the match just seven minutes into the new period. In the 52nd minute, Colin Helmrich placed a perfectly played corner kick ball into the Kangaroo box to a waiting Alex Stronczek, who then directed a successful header into the net to even up the contest at 1-1.
Before the 'Dons had time to regroup, UMKC answered back 34 seconds later and made the score 2-1 after Chris Markey scored his third goal of the season with a 30-yard free-kick shot over the reaching hands of IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier.
In the 72 minute, the Mastodons gained possession in the UMKC box and drew a foul, forcing a penalty kick taken off the leg of Max Touloute. With three steps and a right-footed blast, the senior tied the contest at 2-2 with 18 minutes left in regulation.
As the teams battled back and forth to take the lead, UMKC did just that in the 81st minute, when Rideout netted his second goal of the game after firing a rebounded shot off a Cloutier save, giving the Kangaroos a one-goal advantage.
With time winding down, IPFW made one final push to even up the contest, and in the 88th minute, Jason Mills came up with the game-saving play that would force overtime. From the right side of the field, Helmrich sailed a desperation pass into the UMKC box, where Mills finished the play with a header past Kangaroo goalkeeper Kevin Colby from three-yards out, making the score 3-3.
After a scoreless first overtime session, the teams scrambled to find the go-ahead goal in the final period. Touloute nearly gave IPFW the victory on the final shot of the game, but the attempt was saved by Colby, ending the match at 3-3.
Touloute fired a game-high nine shots, netting his 11th goal of the season in the second half. Stronczek blasted three shots and scored his first-career goal as a Mastodon. Mills attempted just one shot, but netted goal number three in 2011 late in the second frame. Between the posts, Cloutier made six saves for the Mastodons.
IPFW will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 1 against Detroit at Hefner Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
