FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Sophomore Corey Thompson netted his first career goal at the right time for the IPFW men's soccer team, scoring in the final minutes of double-overtime to lift the Mastodons past Horizon League-member Detroit, 2-1 Tuesday evening at Hefner Stadium in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The non-conference win moves IPFW to 7-9-2 (2-2-1) in 2011 with one regular-season match left this Saturday. Detroit drops to 5-11-1 with the road loss.
In a back and forth opening half, the Mastodons pushed the ball deep into Titan territory in the 21st minute, eventually leading to the game's first goal. Liridon Qafleshi gained control of the ball 30 yards out from the Detroit box, then floated a pass to a waiting Alex Stronczek, who directed a header into the back of the net to give IPFW the 1-0 lead. Stronczek has scored a goal in back-to-back games for the 'Dons.
In the 41st minute, Detroit answered back with a goal of their own, coming from Jon Bowman. Bowman received a pass from the left side of the field, then tagged a shot to the far post past IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier to even up the contest at 1-1.
The teams battled the remainder of regulation before taking the game into a pair of overtime sessions. When it appeared the contest was headed for a 1-1 draw, Thompson stormed down the IPFW sideline and changed the game's outcome.
In the 107th minute, the sophomore midfielder broke through the Titan defense and picked up a pass from Max Touloute. With one kick to the far post, Thompson scored the game-winning goal in dramatic fashion to seal the IPFW victory, 2-1.
Thompson's goal came on his only shot of the night, while Touloute fired a career-high 11 shots in Tuesday's win, picking up an assist in the process. Cloutier had a steady night in the IPFW goalie box, earning four saves.
With Summit League Tournament implications on the line, IPFW will host Eastern Illinois on Sat. Nov. 5 in Fort Wayne. Saturday's match will include a Senior Day ceremony prior to the contest.
