CLEVELAND - Behind the impressive play of junior Bruno Carvalho, the IPFW men's golf team captured its first title of the 2011 season Tuesday afternoon at the rain-shortened 2011 Cleveland State Invitational in Beachwood, Ohio. The Mastodons shot a four-man total of 289 to win the 14-team event.
Due to Monday's unplayable conditions, forcing the cancellation of the first 36 holes, the tournament moved to a winner-take-all, 18-hole format on Tuesday. The change, however, didn't alter IPFW's mindset, as the team strung together and posted its best single-round this fall. The Mastodons outplayed second-place finisher and tournament-host Cleveland State by five strokes (294). Austin Peay came in third place with a team total of 295.
Looking to take advantage of picture-perfect weather conditions, Carvalho helped lead the 'Dons to victory after firing a team-best, two-under 69 to finish runner-up in the individual competition. The senior finished one-stroke back of a career-low and tournament-medalist Andrew Bailey (68) of Cleveland State.
Junior Drew Imel earned another top-five finish to his Mastodon career after carding an even-par 71 to tie for third place. Freshman Jacob Groninger mustered a three-over 74 on Tuesday, placing tied for 15th overall in the 75-man field. Eddie Tackett and Tomaz Pinheiro rounded-out the Mastodon scoring, as each posted rounds of 75 to finish tied for 24th overall.
The win marks IPFW's first tournament victory since April 5, 2009, when the program won the Wright State Norm Bullock Collegiate.
After countless practice rounds, leading to individual noticed improvements this fall, head coach Billy King knew it was only a matter of time before the Mastodons found the winner's circle once again.
"This squad has worked as hard as ever with the mental portion of the game the last two weeks," King said. "I'm very, very proud of the guys."
Fresh off the victory, King and the Mastodons will return to action on Oct. 16 at the Dayton Fall Invitational in Kettering, Ohio.
