Touloute, Mills Connection Sends IPFW Past Western Illinois, 2-0

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The combination of senior Max Touloute and freshman Jason Mills was in full force on Saturday evening, as the two Mastodons provided the offense in IPFW's 2-0 shutout win over Western Illinois at the Hefner Soccer Complex in Fort Wayne, Ind.
IPFW remains atop the Summit League standings with the win, moving the squad's record to 6-6-1 (2-0-0) on the season. The Mastodons have won three-straight matches. Western Illinois drops its first league game with the loss, falling to 6-5-1 (1-1-0) in 2011.
In a back and forth first half, the teams traded shots early, firing a combined six attempts in the game's opening minutes. The visitors had a chance to take the game's lead in the 13th minute after blasting back-to-back shots in the same sequence. IPFW goalkeeper freshman Brandon Cloutier, however, came away with a pair of diving saves to keep the contest scoreless at 0-0.
Midway through the opening period, IPFW gained possession at midfield and found a hole in the Western Illinois defense. From here, Mills and Touloute took advantage.
In the 25th minute, Mills received the ball in the Fighting Leatherneck box and footed a pass to Touloute, who took the ball and netted a shot from six-yards out to the near post, giving the Mastodons a 1-0 lead. IPFW carried the one-goal lead into halftime.
In the final period, IPFW moved to a more defensive game-plan, and the strategy paid off, as the Fighting Leathernecks had trouble finding open looks for the remainder of the game.
In the 60th minute, the Mastodons provided insurance to their lead and struck the scoreboard again thanks to the duo of Touloute and Mills.
After retrieving the ball in the Western Illinois box, Touloute sailed a perfect pass to a waiting Mills, who then dribbled two steps and fired a dagger from eight-yards out into the Fighting Leatherneck goal, increasing IPFW's lead to 2-0.
Despite late pushes from Western Illinois, the Mastodon backline held its ground, sweeping away threats of a Fighting Leatherneck comeback run. As time expired for the end of regulation, IPFW held onto the 2-0 conference win.
Touloute and Mills led the Mastodon frontline, as the senior totaled four shots with a goal and an assist, while the freshman blasted two shots to go with a score and an assist. As a team, IPFW totaled 11 shots on the night. Cloutier picked up his second shutout this season in goal for the Mastodons, making eight saves on Saturday.
IPFW will rest and regroup for its next contest a week from today (Oct. 15), when they square-off against Oakland in Rochester, Mich. Game-time is set for 7:00 p.m.
