Western Illinois (12-17, 3-14 Summit) led early in the first set, taking a two-point lead at 10-8 before IPFW rattled off four straight points to lead 12-10, and kept its foot on the gas pedal, eventually taking a 20-13 lead before holding on for the 25-18 opening-set win.
The Mastodons looked as if it had the second set wrapped up, leading 22-18 following a 4-0 run; however, the momentum was stolen by the Leathernecks, as the visitors scored six straight points to lead 24-22 and serve for set point, only to see IPFW answer back with three straight to lead by one at 25-24. With the teams tied at 28, IPFW got a kill from Manwaring, and a combo block from Steenhuysen and Hook to give the Mastodons a 2-0 lead heading into the ten-minute intermission.
There were just two tie scores in the third set, the latest at 6-6, before IPFW ran off a 4-1 run to lead 10-7. The Mastodons quietly pushed ahead in the set, and closed out the contest on a 4-1 run to take the third set 25-16.
