KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oral Roberts' Sid Stewart netted the game-winning goal with 13 seconds left in regulation to send the Golden Eagles past IPFW 3-2 in the semifinal round of the 2011 Summit League Men's Soccer Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Friday evening.
Competing for the first time in league postseason history, the Mastodons stormed out of the gates and netted the game's first goal in record fashion just nine seconds into the opening half. Senior Max Touloute, along with freshman Jason Mills, teamed up to push the ball down the middle of the field, and with a shot from 10 yards out, Touloute gave IPFW a 1-0 lead, scoring the quickest goal in Summit League Tournament history and second fastest in NCAA history.
Before the Mastodons could hold the lead, Oral Roberts countered with a pair of quick goals, coming in the 7th and 15th minutes from Griffin Poindexter and Aaron Birk, respectively. On the second goal, Birk fired a shot that appeared to be saved by IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier, but the ball deflected backwards into the Mastodon net, moving the Golden Eagles ahead 2-1. Oral Roberts held the one-goal advantage into halftime.
Down 2-1, the Mastodons came out as the aggressors early in the second half, tagging four of the frame's first five shots. Two of the four shots were saved by Oral Roberts goalkeeper Nick Petolick.
In the 75th minute, Mills put IPFW back into the contest after receiving a pass from Mitch Falkenstern in the Golden Eagles box. From eight yards out, Mills blasted a shot to the far post past a diving Petolick, tying the contest at 2-2.
As the clock ticked down into the final seconds of regulation, Oral Roberts shocked the 276 in attendance and the Mastodons.
With 13 seconds remaining in the contest, John David James of Oral Roberts lofted a corner kick into the 'Don box to a waiting Stewart, who gained possession, then fired a shot past Cloutier and the Mastodon defense to move the Golden Eagles ahead for good 3-2.
In the back and forth contest, the teams each recorded 15 shots, 11 fouls and five saves. Mills led IPFW with a goal and assist. Touloute and Colin Helmrich each fired a team-best three shots. Cloutier made five saves on the night.
IPFW finishes the 2011 season with an 8-10-3 (3-2-1) record, putting seven Mastodons on All-Summit League teams, while earning a spot to the league tournament for the first time in school history. The Mastodons lose five seniors to graduation, but return a boatload of key players on both sides of the field for the 2012 campaign.
