FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Three new members have been selected for enshrinement into the IPFW Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the Steel Dynamics Keith E. Busse IPFW Alumni Center.
The inductees are: Dan Gebhart '78 from men's basketball and athletics administration; Juan Diaz '87 from men's soccer; and Heather Teagarden '96 from women's volleyball.
Gebhart was a two-year captain on the basketball team at IPFW in 1975-76 and 1976-77 where he scored 416 career points while pulling down 200 rebounds. His biggest contributions to the school came after graduation, where he has worked at IPFW for 32 years, twenty of those in the Athletic Department.
During his time as an administrator at IPFW, he served in many roles, including Associate Athletic Director for Operations, where he served as tournament director for three NCAA Division I Men's Volleyball Tournaments (1988, 1994, and 2000), while the 1994 tournament attendance of 15,495 still ranks as the second-best attended Final Four in NCAA Men's Volleyball history.
"I'm honored, humbled, and a little awestruck by my selection to the IPFW Athletic Hall of Fame," said Gebhart.
Juan Diaz is the men's soccer program career assist leader with 28, and led the team in assists three seasons (1983, 1984, and 1986). He earned All-Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) honors in 1984, 1985, and 1986, and his 12 assists in 1984 are still a single-season school record.
In addition to aiding in scores, Diaz was also proficient in finding the back of the net himself, scoring 33 career goals, while leading the team in the category in 1985.
Teagarden is one of just six players in IPFW women's volleyball history to reach the 1,000-kill and 1,000-dig plateaus in their career. She was named All-GLVC in 1993, 1994, and 1995, and her teams had a combined record of 87-59 including back-to-back GLVC Championships.
She currently ranks fourth in career kills (1,668) and 10th in career digs (1,126) at IPFW.
"It is an honor to be included with the players that I looked up to, like Lloy Ball and Joni Smith, and of course Coach Ball." Said Teagarden.
The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m., at the Steel Dynamics Keith E. Busse IPFW Alumni Center, and reservations can be made by contacting Peggy Mossing at 260-481-6643 or by emailing her at mossing@ipfw.edu.
