Fort Wayne, IN - South Dakota State sophomore guard Nate Wolters scored a game-high 30 points as the Jackrabbits swept the regular season series with IPFW by beating the Mastodons, 80-64 on Thursday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
The win was the first-ever for South Dakota State in Fort Wayne.
IPFW's normally consistent 3-point and free throw shooting let them down in the game. The 'Dons, who averaged eight 3-pointers a game, hit just five. IPFW also came into the game ranked 7th in the nation in free throw shooting, but converted just 11 of 20 attempts.
The Mastodons led from the opening tip until the 10:19 mark of the first half, mostly by getting to the basket. Sophomore guard Frank Gaines slashed for a pair of layups, while senior guard Ben Botts also scored from short range.
SDSU (18-9, 10-6 SL) took their first lead of the game on a drive and basket by freshman guard Braden Carlson. After a jumper by junior guard Jeremy Mixon, that made it 15-14 IPFW, the Jacks took the lead for good in the basketball game.
Senior guard Clint Sargent dropped in his only triple of the game, and late in the half junior guard Griffan Callahan converted a four-point play to put the Jackrabbits up by 10, 37-27. They would lead by eight at the break.
In the second half, it was all Wolters. He tossed in 22 in the second half alone. His three-point play early in the second half put SDSU up by 14 and the 'Dons never threatened the rest of the way.
Wolters led four Jacks in double-digits. Callahan added 19, Sargent had 12 and freshman forward Jordan Dykstra chipped in 10.
IPFW was led in scoring by Gaines with 17. Senior guard Zach Plackemeier was the only other Mastodon in double-figures with 14.
The loss drops IPFW to 16-10 on the season and 9-6 in league play. The Mastodons are now tied for fifth place with UMKC, who topped Western Illinois, 66-61 on Thursday.
Elsewhere around The Summit League, Southern Utah upset IUPUI, 80-68 and IPFW's next opponent North Dakota State nearly knocked off Oakland, 71-69. With the win, Oakland clinches The Summit League regular season title.
The Mastodons will host North Dakota State on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. as part of the 2010-11 Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness.
