MACOMB, Ill. - Led once again by the hot hand of sophomore Bruno Carvalho, the IPFW men's golfers posted a team total of 302 to rest inside the top three after the opening round of the Beu/Mussato Invitational, hosted by Summit League foe Western Illinois.
Scheduled for a two-round opening day, darkness cut a number of players' rounds short. Players will wrap up the second round tomorrow morning before closing out the 54-hole tournament with final round play.
Carvalho, who led IPFW last week at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va., fired a two-over 74 to take a share of eighth place after round one action. The native of Pelotas, Brazil fired an even-par 36 on the front nine, the third best mark in the 89-man, 16-team field.
Sophomore's Drew Imel and Tomaz Pinheiro were in sync in Monday action. Both players shot nine-hole scores of 38 as they settled in for a share of 17th place with matching rounds of 76.
Senior Ryan Olbin's final scorecard was much the same as he too shares a 17th place standing after round one action. Olbin shot a 37 on the front nine before rounding out play with a 39 on the back.
Freshly inserted into the IPFW lineup, freshman Mitch Bellam fired an 80 to check in at 47th place.
As a team, the Mastodons currently sit in a tie with North Dakota State at third overall. Playing on their home course, the Western Illinois Leathernecks shot a 294, taking a five-stroke lead to sit atop the team standings. The South Dakota State Jackrabbits are currently just three strokes ahead of IPFW in second place.
The 16-team field features a total of five Summit League teams.
Eastern Illinois' Gino Parrodi fired an astounding six-under 66 to take the individual lead.
Rounds two and three tomorrow (Mar. 29) will wrap play in the Beu/Mussato Invitational.
