Struggles Doom Mastodons at Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The balls simply did not roll in favor of the Mastodon golfers, as they fell down the leaderboard en route to a 14th place finish at the adidas Indiana University Invitational.
After opening round action saw IPFW shoot a stellar 292, the four-man team scores swelled to 303 and 309 in today's rounds two and three action. The overall three-round score of 904 place the Mastodons in 14th overall, eight strokes ahead of the Detroit Titans.
Tomaz Pinheiro, who sat in a tie for third place yesterday evening after a career-best 68, finished in a tie for 15th place overall. The sophomore finished out the second round this morning with a 73 and closed with a 76 in the afternoon 18.
The 217 overall is Pinheiro's best three-round tournament as a collegian.
Fellow sophomore Drew Imel carded a consistent three-round score of 225 to finish in a tie for 43rd. The Bluffton, Indiana native opened play yesterday with a 74 and posted rounds of 76 and 75 this afternoon.
Senior Ryan Olbin wrapped his three-round total two strokes behind Imel with a 227, closing the outing in a tie for 53rd place with rounds of 75-75-77.
Freshman Patrick Kundenreich finished nine strokes and 21 spots behind his senior captain, as he shot 75-79-82, closing out Sunday action with a 236 and share of 74th place.
Sophomore Bruno Carvalho rounded out the IPFW lineup, as he fired rounds of 76-80-81 to take 76th overall.
Ball State's Tyler Merkel took overall medalist honors after rounds of 71-68-70 and the Indiana Hoosiers cruised to a 15-stroke victory on their home course to garner the team honors.
The three-round tournament was IPFW's final tune-up in preparation for The Summit League Championship. Hosted by Primm Valley Golf Club in Primm, Nevada, the Mastodon squad will chase a bid for the NCAA Championship beginning April 18.
