BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A new collegiate best for sophomore Tomaz Pinheiro led the Mastodons to one of their lowest rounds of the year, as their 292 overall has them in 10th place after round one at the highly competitive adidas Indiana Invitational.
Pinheiro carded a 68 overall on the par-71 Indiana University Course. The round, which placed Pinheiro in a tie for third overall in the 78-man field, bettered his previous career best by two strokes set in September of 2010 at UW-Green Bay.
He sits just two strokes behind Cleveland State's Kent Monas, who fired a 66 in the opening round.
Sophomore Drew Imel fired a rock-solid round of 74 to wrap first day action. He currently sits in a tie for 39th place.
Senior Ryan Olbin posted a 75, as did big-hitting freshman Patrick Kundenreich, to round out Mastodons scorers in the lineup. They each finished in a tie for 48th place overall.
Sophomore Bruno Carvalho finished one stroke behind Olbin and Kundenreich, as his 76 placed him in a tie for 58th place in the event.
The opening round 292 placed IPFW in 10th as a team, one spot ahead of Summit League foes Oakland.
Familiar to the hometown course, the Indiana Hoosiers currently sit in first place with their top team and second with Indiana "B."
Second round play began briefly this evening, with no IPFW players making it beyond the fifth hole. Second round play will resume tomorrow morning before the third and final round wraps play in the event.
