Fort Wayne, IN - In the home opener of the season, the IPFW Mastodons came out on top against the Indiana State Sycamores, 1-0, in a highly defensive match.
In a first half that was filled with physical play, both of the teams defenses were able to dominate the play for the most of the half with both teams only managing one shot each with zero on goal.
IPFW's best scoring chances in the first half came in the last three minutes before heading into the locker room when the Mastodons were able to put some possession together. The 'Dons kept the pressure on ISU for the remainder of the half with three corner kicks by junior Tylar Allison.
Both offenses came out swinging after halftime. A minute into the second half, the Sycamores put a shot on goal that required a save by IPFW senior goalie Jessica Schein.
Allison continued to apply pressure and found a weakness in the ISU defense and was able to serve two crosses into the penalty box. However, the IPFW attackers were unable to finish these attacking chances.
In the 74th minute, Allison stepped up to take an indirect free kick after a Sycamore foul and sent the ball into the box where junior Danielle Bishop possessed the ball and sent it into the goal past ISU goalie Brianna Supulski giving IPFW the winning goal.
ISU nearly tied the match two minutes later after a shot by Taylor Reed ricocheted off
of the crossbar. The Sycamores had several other chances to tie the match, but none were ever a threat due to several offsides calls.
In the aggressive match, ISU committed 13 fouls while IPFW committed 15.
Schein, a Butler transfer, played the full 90 minutes in goal for the 'Dons with one save.
The Mastodons outshot the Sycamores six to five while taking five corner kicks to ISU's two.
IPFW will return to action on Sunday in an away match against Valpariaso. Kick off is set for 6 p.m. in Valparaiso, Indiana.
