Fort Wayne, IN - Bradley fired a successful penalty kick in the 39th minute, and that's all the Braves needed to secure a 1-0 win over the IPFW men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex in Fort Wayne, IN.
The Mastodons fall to 1-1-0 on the young 2011 season, while the Braves win their second-straight road match, moving to 2-0-0.
In a tightly played first half, the teams battled up and down the field looking to find the scoreboard on the sunny, mild summer day.
In the 39th minute, Bradley gained position at midfield and dribbled down into Mastodon territory. During the play, the Braves drew a foul in the goalie box, leading to a penalty kick.
Bradley's Bryan Gall set the ball at the 12-yard mark and fired a shot to the right post past IPFW goalkeeper Ryan Bristol, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, Mastodon senior Max Touloute had a similar play in Brave territory, drawing a trip in the visitor's box. This time, however, a no-call from the referees resulted in a change of possession.
Bradley would hold onto the one-goal lead into halftime.
In the final frame, IPFW stormed out looking to even the score with a more aggressive offensive attack.
Senior Colin Helmrich had a pair of chances, with the first coming in the 62th minute, when he drove far side and missed a shot wide to the right post. In the 70th minute, Helmrich blasted another attempt from 15 yards out, but the shot was saved.
Unfortunately for IPFW, the Bradley defense held its ground and prevented the home team from finding the scoreboard the reminder of the match.
Offensively, IPFW picked up two shots each from Helmrich, Jason Mills, Alex Stronczek and Liridon Qafleshi. Despite not stopping the free-kick, Bristol had a fine game in goal for IPFW, making seven saves. He now has 16 on the season.
For the game, the 'Dons fired 12 shots, while the Braves attempted 20.
The Mastodons will regroup and hit the road for their next match on Aug. 31 against Bowling Green. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m. EST.
