Dayton, OH - IPFW trailed just once over the entire match, on the first point of the third set, topping the Raiders of Wright State University 3-0 on Tuesday night (25-22, 25-17, 25-19) in a non-conference match, the Mastodons' second Horizon League foe in its first three matches of the season.
Emily Spencer picked up a game-high 12 kills as juniors Jessie Manwaring and Haley Emenhiser each ended the match with nine kills apiece. Megan Steenhuysen dished out 33 assists as Tessa McGill and Spencer had 13 and 12 digs, apiece, Spencer's for her second career double-double. Megan Wiler had a team-high five blocks, as the Mastodons totaled eight blocks in the contest.
In the first set the Mastodons (2-1) never trailed, jumping out to a quick 9-4 advantage; however, the Raiders used back-to-back 3-0 runs to knot the score at 11 apiece. The score was tied at a dozen each before IPFW scored four straight points to push back ahead at 16-12, and cruised to the 25-22 opening-set win.
Back-to-back attack errors, followed by a Steenhuysen ace put the 'Dons ahead, as the Blue and White led wire-to-wire in the second set. Wright State (0-4) closed the gap to two as late as 8-6, but a 5-0 IPFW run put the visitors ahead by seven, before settling in for a 25-17 victory in the second set.
Wright State took its first and only lead of the match with a kill by Heidi Splinter to open the third set, before IPFW scored three straight to reclaim the advantage. The Raiders cut into the gap at 15-11 before the 'Dons scored five straight, and seven of the next nine to give the visitors a nine-point lead. The lead remained at nine at 24-15 before the hosts mounted a rally, scoring the next four points, but a service error ended the comeback, giving IPFW the 25-19 third-set win.
Anna Norman had six kills in the losing effort for Wright State, as Heidi Splinter added a dozen digs.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, September 2, when the squad travels to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on the Drake Bulldogs in the first day of Drake's two-day tournament.
