Cleveland, OH - Behind a season-high 17 blocks, including eight each from Alli Hook and Jessie Manwaring, the IPFW Mastodons rebounded from its 3-0 loss the night before to down the Cleveland State Vikings 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22) in the second of three games at the Cleveland State Tournament.
Hook had two solo blocks and six assisted, while Manwaring had a single solo block, and seven block assists. Megan Wiler added four, as Haley Emenhiser and Emily Spencer each added three blocks to the IPFW effort.
Spencer picked up her second straight and sixth overall double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs, while Alli Hook knocked down a season-high 11 kills on the afternoon. Emenhiser narrowly missed double figures with nine, while Manwaring and Wiler had nine kills apiece.
The Mastodons came out firing on all cylinders to open the match, scoring the contest's first six points, including the first three on blocks. Cleveland State fought back, eventually tying the set at 18, but a 6-2 run to end the set gave IPFW the first-set, 25-21 victory.
The Vikings evened the score in the second set with a 25-23 final set score in a frame that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes, with all of the changes coming via large runs, including a 4-0 run by Cleveland State to turn a 23-21 deficit into a 25-23 second-set win.
Cleveland State scored first in the third set, only to see IPFW score the next three, as the 'Dons never trailed again in the frame, using a 5-0 run in the middle of the set, cruising in the third 25-20.
The fourth and eventual final set saw five more ties and four more lead changes, the last of the switches of the lead coming on a 5-1 IPFW run that ruend an 11-10 deficit into a 15-12 lead, one that the 'Dons would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Tessa McGill had a match-high 19 digs, her 16th consecutive match with double-figure digs, tied for the third longest such streak in program history, giving the junior from Muncie two of the top three longest dig streaks in program history. Spencer added 13 digs, as Megan Steenhuysen narrowly missed a double-double with eight digs and a match-high 48 assists.
Kara Koch led the way for Cleveland State with 18 kills, while Amy Grabiec had 18 digs in the losing effort.
The Mastodons return to action later this afternoon when they face off against the DePaul Blue Demons of the BIG EAST Conference in the third and final match of the tournament for the two schools.
