
Spencer's 14 Kills Lead IPFW over Kent State

Kent, OH - Behind a balanced offensive attack that saw Emily Spencer and Haley Emenhiser each reach double-figure kills, the IPFW Mastodons swept the Kent State Golden Flashes 25-20, 26-24, 25-19 on Thursday evening.
Spencer led IPFW (6-4) with a match-high 14 kills, while Emenhiser had a season-high 12 kills. Reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week Tessa McGill had a match-high 16 digs, her 18th straight match with double-figure digs. Megan Wiler had five blocks, while Megan Steenhuysen dished out 40 assists.
The Mastodons never trailed in the first set, as the Golden Flashes (7-7) were able to tie the score at one, seven, and eight. With the frame tied at 8-8, IPFW ran off five straight points, and seven of eight to stretch its lead to six at 15-9. The lead grew to as many as seven, and as few as four the rest of the way in the 25-20 IPFW set win.
There were 19 tie scores in the second set, as the Mastodons hit .342 in the frame. IPFW used an early 3-0 run to lead 4-2, but Kent State would not be out-done, using a 3-0 run of its own to push ahead to a 9-8 lead, forcing the Mastodons into a timeout. Following the 75-second break, IPFW ran off four straight points to re-take the lead at 12-9.
Kent State fought back, taking a one-point, 15-14 lead, as the teams traded sideouts for the next eight points. Trailing 22-21, freshman Kendall Wienkes picked up back-to-back kills, and had three kills in a four-point stretch, as IPFW scored five of the final seven points of the second set, taking the 26-24 frame win.
IPFW never trailed in the third and final set, and scored eight of ten points during a stretch to push its lead to as many as nine at 16-9. The feisty Kent State squad fought back, closing to within as few as four late in the set, but the early deficit was too much to overcome as IPFW pulled out the third frame 25-19.
Maigan Larsen had a team-high nine kills, while Brooke Zeigler had 11 digs.
The Mastodons, after opening its 2011 season with ten straight road games, return home to the newly renovated Gates Sports Center for the Summit League opener against the Oakland Grizzlies on Saturday, September 17, with first-serve slated for 7:00 PM.
