
Mastodons Stand in Contention After First Day of Michigan State Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - After 36 holes of play, the IPFW men's golf team performed extremely well in their first tournament of 2011 season, firing a team total of 599 and sitting in sixth place overall at the Michigan State Fossum Invitational.
Competing against a 12-team field, the Mastodons held the overall lead after 18 holes, totaling an impressive 291. Currently, the squad sits 13 strokes back of tournament-leader and host Michigan State (586). The 'Dons are three strokes back of fourth place, seated by Tennessee State and St. Francis-Pennsylvania (596).
The Royal Blue and White are represented well on the individual leaderboard, as a pair of 'Dons are placed in the top-15 overall.
Junior Drew Imel was consistent on the first day, posting back-to-back rounds of 73 on the par 72, Forest Akers Golf Course. He sits tied for eighth place overall to lead IPFW.
Two strokes back is sophomore Patrick Kundenreich, who came out firing in round one with a two-under 70 to go with a 78 in round two. He's tied for 15th place heading into Sunday.
With a 151, junior Bruno Carvalho is tied for 28th overall after shooting rounds of 72-79. Junior Curtis Coverstone fired rounds of 77-78 and is placed tied for 46th. Rounding out the Mastodon starting-five is freshman Jacob Groninger, who shot a 76 in the morning, followed by an 80 in the second round. He sits tied for 51st place.
Hitting the course for the first time in a Mastodon uniform, Eddie Tackett didn't disappoint competing as an individual for IPFW. The freshman opened with a 74 to go with a 75 in the second round to stand tied for 21st place.
Tennessee State's Cameron Scitern is the overall leader heading into Sunday after totaling a 142 (72-70).
The third and final round will tee-off at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.
