Fort Wayne, IN – Looking for an impressive showing on Sunday afternoon, the IPFW men's soccer team turned up the heat offensively in a big way in front of a crowd of over 300 in attendance, scoring six goals, four in the second half alone to bounce Nebraska-Omaha, 6-0 at the Hefner Soccer Complex in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The first home win of the season improves IPFW to 2-2 overall in 2011. The six goals are the most by the men's soccer team since Sept. 23, 2008, when the 'Dons beat Urbana, 4-0. With the loss, Nebraska-Omaha moves 1-2 this season.
In a tightly-played first half, the teams battled back and forth for scoring opportunities, as the scoreboard read 0-0 with just five minutes to play until halftime.
From here, the IPFW frontline went to work.
At the 40th minute mark, Jason Mills made the score 1-0 after receiving a double-pass in the Maverick box from Max Touloute and Nate Shipman. Once the ball arrived, Mills fired a dagger from 10-yards out to the far post.
Three minutes later, Touloute scored his first of two goals in the game after stealing the ball from a Nebraska-Omaha defender in the visitor's box, then fired a shot from six-yards out into the net, giving the Mastodons a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The second half featured a similar offensive showing from IPFW, as the home team didn't take long to increase its lead. In the 47th minute, Colin Helmrich blasted an attempt that deflected off Maverick goalkeeper Josh Christensen, ending in the back of the goal. The scoring drive was assisted by Mills and gave IPFW a 3-0 lead.
Midway through the final frame, Touloute scored his second goal after receiving the ball from Mike Enghofer in Maverick territory, then fired a shot to the left post, increasing the 'Don advantage to 4-0.
Not finished in the half, Helmrich once again found the scoreboard, this time after tagging a successful shot from just inside the Nebraska-Omaha box. Helmrich's second goal pushed to score to 5-0.
In the 79th minute, the Mastodons scored their final goal, when Helmrich lofted a corner-kick into the Maverick box to a waiting Ross McWilliams, who nailed a header to the far post, ending the scoring rout to secure a 6-0 IPFW win.
The Mastodons fired a season-high 21 shots, 13 were on goal. Nebraska-Omaha tallied 13 shots in the losing effort.
Touloute and Helmrich led the 'Dons with two goal apiece. Touloute recorded an assist, as well. Mills scored his first career-goal and added an assist to go with two shots. Ryan Bristol picked up his first career shutout, making two saves in the process. Brandon Cloutier notched a save after entering the game midway through the final period.
The men's soccer team will hit the road for their next contest on Tuesday, Sept. 6 against #21 Kentucky. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
