Men's Basketball Makes Season Gates Center Debut on Thursday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's basketball program will be making its first appearance at the Gates Sports Center for a game in nearly two years, as the Mastodons play host to the North Dakota State Bison on Thursday night, January 26.

SCOUTING THE BISON
North Dakota State comes into Thursday night's game riding a two-game losing skid, the program's longest this season. In the last loss, a 91-88 overtime defeat at the hands of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, NDSU overcame a 10-point deficit with 4:45 to play in regulation to force the extra period, and led by four early in the overtime period, but SDSU made its last 12 free throws of overtime to clinch the three-point victory.
Taylor Braun scored a game-high 28 points while pulling down 12 rebounds for the double-double, as TrayVonn Wright
scored 16, Lawrence Alexander 14, and Dylan Hale 11.
For the season, Bruan leads the team by averaging 16.2 points per game, with Marshall Bjorklun and Lawrence Alexander sitting at 12.0 and 11.9 points per game, each. Mike Felt and Wright are just off of the double figure pace with 9.7 and 9.0 points per game, respectively.
Braun leads the team with a 7.1 rebound per game average, with Bjorklund and Wright averaging 6.4 and 5.9, each. As a team, NDSU out-rebounds its opponents by 2.4 rebounds per game. Alexander has 96 assists to lead the team, while Braun has 25 steals, and Wright 28 blocks.
SERIES vs. NORTH DAKOTA STATE
Despite seeing its four-game series win streak snapped earlier this season, IPFW holds a 7-6 lead in the all-time series against North Dakota State. The two teams split each of the first six meetings, before NDSU swept the 2008-09 season en route to their NCAA Tournament berth. The last two seasons saw IPFW sweep the yearly series, before the Bison ended their skid with the 84-68 win in Fargo on December 30.
EARLIER vs. NORTH DAKOTA STATE
The IPFW Mastodons used a 14-0 run in the first half to jump ahead early; however, North Dakota State answered with a
14-0 run of its own with nine minutes to play in the game, and the Bison made 22 of their last 24 free throws in the game to pull away to an 84-68 win at the Bison Sports Arena on Friday evening.
Frank Gaines scored a game-high-tying 26 points, making 10-of-23 shots from the field, and 5-of-6 from the charity
stripe. Justin Jordan scored an IPFW career-high 14 points, hitting 4-of-8 of his shots from beyond the three-point arc, while Trey McCorkle added 10.
John Peckinpaugh pulled down a team-leading six rebounds, five of those on the offensive end, while Mario Hines
grabbed five in the losing effort. Antwaun Boyd dished out a game-high four assists, while he, Gaines, and McCorkle each finished the game with two steals apiece.
LAST TIME OUT
Two chances at the rim with under three seconds on the clock would not fall, as the Southern Utah Thunderbirds held on for a 58-56 thriller on Saturday evening.
Frank Gaines scored a game-high 19 points, while Justin Jordan finished a point shy of his career-high with 13. Trey
McCorkle scored seven points, while John Peckinpaugh and Antwaun Boyd scored six apiece.
Gaines pulled down a game-high-tying nine rebounds, as Peckinpaugh and Mario Hines each grabbed five. Jonny Marlin dished out three assists, as Boyd gave out two. Four players (Boyd, Jordan, Hines, and Michael Kibiloski) each had one block, as five others (Peckinpaugh, Marlin, Gaines, Boyd, and Jordan) had one steal.

According to the latest NCAA Statistical rankings (1/22/12), IPFW junior Frank Gaines currently ranks 14th in the country in points per game, averaging 20.2 per contest. He has reached the 20-point plateau in 11 of the team's 19 games this season, including scoring a career-high 30 points against Western Illinois on January 7. In all, the Summit League has five scorers inside of the top-14 overall, with Oakland's Reggie Hamilton leading the league and is second in the country.
