FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons went cold in front of a nearly packed Gates Sports Center, making just 32.7 percent from the field and 11.8 percent from long range in a 74-43 loss to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Saturday evening.
The game was nearly a sellout, as 1,856 fans packed the gym, and saw the Mastodons fall to 10-11 on the season, and 4-8 in the Summit League, while South Dakota State, who currently sits in second place in the league standings, improves to 17-6 and 9-2 in league play.
Mario Hines led the team in scoring and rebounding with 12 points and six boards in a game that saw IPFW put together its lowest scoring output since behind held to 43 points at North Dakota State on January 31, 2009. Frank Gaines scored 10 and picked up a team-high three steals, while Justin Jordan dished out four assists.
IPFW took out to an early lead in the game, leading for most of the first seven minutes of play, and led by one at 11-10 after a Hines lay-in with 13:06 to play in the first half. SDSU proceeded to run off a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to lead by 11 24-13.
The Jackrabbits would not trail again, although IPFW seemed to claim momentum after cutting the deficit to seven with 45 seconds to play after a Michael Kibiloski three-point basket; however, back-to-back three-point baskets in the last five seconds of the half quickly turned the momentum into the favor of SDSU, who took a 13-point, 36-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A 9-2 run to start the second half pushed the deficit to 20, and the margin reached 32 with 8:21 to play in the game, capping a 27-8 Jackrabbit run to start the second half, as the visitors cruised to a 73-43 Summit League win.
IPFW made just 16-of-49 shots from the field, and 2-of-17 from long range. South Dakota State, who came into the game ranked first in the Summit League and in the top-15 in the NCAA in scoring average, scored their 74 points on 24-of-52 shooting from the field, and 9-of-20 from long range.
Chad White made 4-of-5 long range shots, totaling a game-high 15 points for the Jackrabbits, while Nate Wolters added 14 while dishing out five assists.
The Mastodons take to the road for seven of their last eight games of the season, starting with a weekend road swing to Macomb, Illinois on February 2 to take on the Leathernecks of Western Illinois University in an 8 p.m. tip-off (EST).
