IPFW Sweeps Weekend Series Against Mount Olive College

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The IPFW men's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep over Mount Olive College Saturday morning, blanking the Trojans 3-0 at the Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C. The Mastodons won the first match Friday evening, 3-1.
IPFW moves to 5-3 with the win, improving its 2012 road record to 4-2 in the process. Mount Olive drops to 2-4 with the loss.
In a closely played first set, the teams battled and forth until IPFW gained the lead at 18-17. On the following play, Ivan Matos notched a kill to put the 'Dons ahead by two, forcing a Trojan timeout. Mount Olive responded well out of the break, taking the set into extra points. A late kill from Anthony Randolph gave IPFW a 28-27 advantage, before a Trojan error on set point handed the visitors a 29-27 first set win.
With the gained confidence, IPFW steamed ahead in the second frame, moving in front 15-9. The Mastodons continued to feed the middle of its offense in the set, where Corey Frain and Ramon Burgos teamed up for five kills. When IPFW earned set point at 24-17, Frain earned the serve and tagged a service ace to clinch the frame, 25-17.
In the third and would be final set, the 'Dons once again earned the lead at 15-12. The three-point deficit by Mount Olive would be the closest they would come, as IPFW picked up kills from Burgos and Eddie Rivera to take the frame to set point. On the final play of the match, Frain blasted a kill off a pass from Adam Quinn to cement the IPFW win, 25-17.
Randolph paced the Mastodons with a career-high 12 kills. Matos tallied 11 kills, while Burgos posted eight. The freshman also notched an eye-popping .727 hitting-mark against Mount Olive. Quinn managed a game-high 45 assists, while Jonathan Meyer earned 13 digs in the road win.
IPFW recorded a .394 hitting-percentage against the Trojans, dropping a .500 mark in set two alone. Each team totaled five service aces Saturday.
The Mastodons will return to action on Feb. 3, when they open MIVA competition at the Gates Sports Center against #7 Lewis. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST.
