Men's Golf Closes Cleveland State Invite in Fifth Place

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The IPFW men's golf team carded a final-round 302 at the legendary Canterbury Golf Course, and closed out the Cleveland State Invitational in fifth place overall in the field.
IPFW's three-round 900 was three away from Youngstown State in fourth and eight away from Appalachian State in third. Oakland took home the team championship with a 871, just ahead of tournament host Cleveland State with an 874. Detroit (900), Wright State (913), Robert Morris (914), Evansville (933), Loyola (Ill.) (935), and Malone (940) rounded out the 11 teams in the field.
Sophomore Jacob Groninger closed out the tournament with a final-round 74, carding a team-best three-round score of 223, tying for 10th in the field. Drew Imel and E.J. Tackett each carded a 226 for the tournament, Imel shooting a final-round 76 and Tackett a 77, tying for 17th in the field.
Freshman Oliver Gibson, playing in his first tournament as a collegian, shot a final-round 75 to finish third on the squad for the day, and fourth overall in the tournament with a three-round 228, placing 25th. Bruno Carvalho rounded out the Mastodons on the scoring squad with an 80 on the third round, giving him a 232 which tied for 37th.
Freshman Drake Devereux rebounded from an opening-round 86 to fire back-to-back 75's as an individual, finishing with a three-round total of 236 in a tie for 45th overall.
The Mastodons return to action on October 22 and 23 when the squad heads south to Kettering, Ohio to compete in the Dayton Flyer Invitational at the NCR South Country Club.
