Bishop Blasts IPFW to Home Finale Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Senior Danielle Bishop rebounded her own penalty kick attempt in the 73rd minute for her second goal of the match to push the IPFW Mastodons to a 2-1 win on senior day at the Hefner Soccer Field.

Bishop also scored 33 seconds into the second half, as the Mastodons (9-7-1, 5-2-1 Summit League) claim the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament hosted by South Dakota State this coming weekend, and will face off against the North Dakota State Bison.

The win also guarantees IPFW of a winning record for the first time since the 2003 team went 9-7-3, tying the single-season win mark, also set during that season.

The Mastodons peppered the IUPUI goal all game long, and finished the match with a 27-6 advantage in shots, and a 10-0 lead in corner kicks.

The IUPUI defense got tested early, as first-half goalkeeper Giselle Guzman picked up a save on an Arianne Mason header attempt just 47 seconds into the contest. Despite taking 13 first-half shots, and putting four on goal, the squads were sent into the locker room knotted in a scoreless tie.

IPFW wasted little time to start the second half, as Rachel Good sent a ball through the box to a waiting Bishop, who put the ball into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

Trailing for the first time in the game, IUPUI provided an equalizer four and a half minutes later when Grace Perkowitz' shot attempt bounced off of the crossbar, and then down straight two the ground, but not before dropping deep enough to cross the line seconds before IPFW keeper Sam Pavlika pick up the save, knotting the score at one apiece.

The Mastodons took seven shots and were awarded four corner kicks before Good was pushed to the ground in the box during a penalty kick attempt, and the subsequent foul gave IPFW a penalty kick attempt with 16:19 to play in the game.

Bishop's penalty kick attempt was stopped by second-half goalkeeper Kristin Haseley; however, the ball bounced directly back to Bishop, who put the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner - Bishop's sixth game-winner of her career, tying the school record.

The Jaguars were unable to get a shot off in the final 16-plus minutes of the game, as the Mastodons held on for the narrow win.

Mason had a match-high 10 shots in the win, while Erin Gill had six and Bishop four. Haseley had a match-high five saves, while Guzman had four. IPFW's goalkeeper Sam Pavlika had just one save, in allowing the solitary goal, as she ends the regular season with a 1.03 goals against average, and allowed more than one goal just twice during her first year between the pipes.
