FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW Mastodons will play the Detroit Titans on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The IPFW Athletic Department will be hosting Fitness Day for Fort Wayne Community School elementary students, allowing the children to attend the game which will tip-off at 11:30 a.m.
ABOUT IPFW
The Mastodons are now 3-7 overall after losing to Michigan State on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 64-37. Erin Murphy and Amanda Hyde led the offensive charge against MSU with 12 and nine points respectively. Hyde is now 29th in the nation with a 19.2 scoring average.
The Mastodons continue to shoot the ball well from the free throw line as the team ranks 15th in the NCAA with a team free throw percentage of 77 percent. Appalachian State leads the country with an 83.2 percentage.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
The Titans are 5-4 overall with two of their four losses coming against Big Ten opponents. Detroit lost at Michigan in the season opener 70-62, but responded by winning back-to-back games over Canisius and Eastern Michigan. UDM went on to lose two games at the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament with an 80-72 setback against No. 7 Penn State and a 56-59 loss vs. South Alabama. Detroit has most recently won three of their last four with victories over Western Michigan, Ohio and Lourdes. Their only loss during that stretch came at Ball State, an opponent that IPFW faced on Nov. 19, 73-64.
IPFW will have to block out when the Titans come to town because Detroit has outrebounded their opponent in every game this season placing them first in the Horizon League and 25th in the NCAA. Shareta Brown and Yar Shayok are a big reason why as the duo share the team lead by averaging 9.8 rebounds per contest. Brown doubles up as the leading scorer both on the team and in the nation with an average of 25.1. She is coming off a 43 point performance against Lourdes which tied Amanda Hyde's mark for the most points in a single game this season.
Senior Demeisah Fambro and Audrey Matteson are also high impact players on the Detroit roster. Matteson leads the team with an assist average of 3.8. She shoots 41 percent from the floor while chipping in with seven rebounds per contest. Fambro is a shooter that is averaging 11.2 points per game to go along with five boards per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Detroit leads the all-time series over IPFW 5-1. The Mastodons recorded their lone win of the series in 2010 when they defeated the Titans 78-66 at the Memorial Coliseum behind the performances of Stephanie Rosado and Anne Boese who each ended the game with 13 points.
ONE YEAR AGO TODAY
IPFW faced Detroit exactly one year ago as the two teams battled in Calihan Hall on Dec. 18, 2011. Rachel Mauk led the 'Dons with a team-high 17 points, while Stephanie Rosado finished with 14 and Erin Murphy chipped in with 12. Senee Shearer led all scorers with a career-high 23 points to pace the Titans. Detroit outrebounded IPFW by a 40-23 margin.
LAST TIME OUT
The IPFW women's basketball team fell to 3-7 overall with a 64-36 loss at Michigan State on Sunday afternoon. Erin Murphy led IPFW with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
IPFW outscored Michigan State 25-24 in the second half, but a 40-11 deficit after the first 20 minutes put the Mastodons in a deep hole. The 'Dons shot 25 percent from the floor in the opening half (5-20) which included a 0-of-7 effort from 3-point range. The second half evened out as IPFW shot 30 percent compared to just 28 percent from the Spartans.
Murphy was the bright spot for IPFW offensively as she netted 12 points to go along with two rebounds. Amanda Hyde, who battled foul trouble, ended the game with nine points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Bench points were tied at 17 each as Murphy provided a spark for IPFW and MSU got good minutes from Kiana Johnson and Jasmine Hines. Johnson had eight points and Hines worked IPFW in the paint with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Spartans lead the country in defensive field goal percentage and it showed on Sunday afternoon as Michigan State forced 22 IPFW turnovers. The Spartans capitalized on the IPFW miscues by scoring 25 points off turnovers compared to just two for IPFW. Michigan State dominated second chance points 19-4 and fast break points 12-3.
THREE-POINT STREAK
The IPFW Mastodons have made a 3-point field goal in 415 straight contests, a stretch that ranks as the fourth longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Iowa State's streak is at the top of the list by making a 3-point field goal in 555 consecutive games. Sam Houston State and Connecticut rank ahead of IPFW with 507 and 481 respectively.
HYDE SCORES 43 AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
Amanda Hyde scored a career-high 43 points in a win over Southern Illinois 78-65. The 43 points placed her in a tie for second all-time in Summit League history, and also tied the IPFW school record for most points in a game.
43 points puts Hyde in a tie for the highest single-game total in NCAA Division I this season. Shareta Brown of Detroit recently scored 43 against Lourdes on Dec. 10. Other student-athlete to score more than 40 include Amy Patton of Northern Arizona who scored 41 points against Bradley on Nov. 24 and Kevi Luper of Oral Roberts who dropped 40 points against Missouri State on Nov. 29.
SINGLE GAME INDIVIDUAL POINTS RECORD
Amanda Hyde tied Lindy Jones for a share of the IPFW single-game scoring record. Jones scored 43 points against St. Joseph's during the 1995-96 season. Other Mastodons to reach 40 points in a game include Jamie Holderman and Lisa Miller. Holderman scored 40 against Quincy on Feb. 17, 2001 and Miller recorded her 40 point game against IUPUI on Jan. 23, 1992.
MAUK MAKING AN IMPACT
Stefanie Mauk has started in all 10 games for IPFW this season. The 5-10 junior from Lima, Ohio is filling up the stat sheet with her hustle plays. Mauk leads the team with a rebound average of 7.2 per game. She grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds at Southern Illinois and recently hauled down 10 at Michigan State. She has led the team in rebound in seven of 10 games this season. Mauk has also led the team in the steals category six different times this season as she is tied with Amanda Hyde for the team lead with 17 total.
KIDS FITNESS DAY
IPFW will be hosting Fitness Day for Fort Wayne Community School elementary students prior to the Mastodon women's basketball game against Detroit. Following Fitness Day, the students will be provided lunches, courtesy of Chase Bank, consisting of a Subway sandwich, apples, and water as part of their healthy event at IPFW. Chase is also providing transportation to and from campus for all five elementary schools as well as tickets for the kids to the game.
Fitness Day is sponsored by Chase, WMEE-FM 97.3, WQHK-FM 105.1, Fred Toenges Shoes, and the IPFW Athletic Department.
