Summit League Season Begins for IPFW Women's Basketball

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW women's basketball team will face IUPUI on Friday night as the Summit League season officially gets underway with the Mastodons and Jaguars tipping off at 7 p.m.
ABOUT IPFW
The Mastodons are coming off a 71-59 win over Rochester College, the first win during the month of December for IPFW. Stefanie Mauk was the player of the game as she set new career-high marks with 20 points and 15 rebounds against the Warriors.
IPFW enters the Summit League schedule with an overall record of 4-8. They picked up wins over Grace, Coastal Carolina, Southern Illinois, and Rochester.
SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
IUPUI is 6-6 overall after falling to Purdue on Dec. 21 by the final score of 53-78. Signature wins for the Jaguars include victories over Valparaiso (75-69) and Indiana State (71-67), yet they find themselves on a two-game losing streak having lost to Butler on Dec. 18, 67-58.
Kerah Nelson has not been in the starting lineup since Dec. 5 when she dropped 25 points and six rebounds vs Western Michigan. Nelson was crowned Summit League Player of the Week on Dec. 10 and she also earned First Team All-Summit League Preseason honors. Joining Nelson with some preseason recognition is guard Katie Comello who earned second team accolades. Comello is averaging 9.3 points per game and also leads the team with an assist average of 2.7.
A new face on the Jaguar roster that is sure to impact the game on Friday is transfer DeAirra Goss. Goss is leading the team with a 14.2 scoring average. She shoots 43 percent from the floor and has started in all 12 contests for the Jaguars.

LAST TIME OUT
The IPFW women's basketball team defeated Rochester College by the final score of 71-59. Stefanie Mauk put together a stellar performance by setting new career-highs with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
Mauk hit five 3-point field goals against the Warriors and ended the game 7-of-13 from the floor to net her team-high 20 points. Her defensive effort was equally as good as Mauk grabbed 12 defensive rebounds while also leading the team in blocked shots with two.
Amanda Hyde and Erin Murphy also impacted the game by reaching a double figure scoring totals. Hyde hit all nine of her free throw attempts as she ended the day with 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Murphy once again provided the 'Dons with a spark off the bench scoring 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
Head Coach Chris Paul used the entire roster against Rochester as nine players recorded over 10 minutes of playing time. The team responded by outscoring Rochester in bench points and fast break points.
3-point shooting was a major factor in the opening half as each team hit 50 percent of their shots from distance. Haley Seibert drilled a 3-point field goal to give IPFW a one point advantage and then freshman Courtney Ogle got involved with a 3 moments later that pushed the lead to 19-10. The end of the half was a two person shootout as Mauk and Russell went head-to-head in the scoring column. Mauk hit three 3-point field goals in the final three minutes of the half and Russell kept her team alive with eight points which made the score 38-28 at the half.
The second half got very interesting as Rochester came back to tie the game at 54-54 after a three-point play from Tomaschko. Mur Hagerman jump started the IPFW offense after the tie by scoring four-straight points. Hyde would also help cushion the lead with a jumper mixed in with a pair of free throws. The duo of Hagerman and Hyde helped IPFW hold onto a lead as the Mastodons earned their first win in the month of December with a 71-59 victory.

THREE-POINT STREAK
The IPFW Mastodons have made a 3-point field goal in 417 straight contests, a stretch that ranks as the fourth longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Iowa State's streak is at the top of the list by making a 3-point field goal in 556 consecutive games. Sam Houston State and Connecticut rank ahead of IPFW with 509 and 483 respectively.
ALL-TIME SERIES
IPFW leads the all-time series over IUPUI, but it is extremely close at 11-10. The Jaguars pulled within one game of the all-time series after beating IPFW 76-62 in the last meeting. The 2011-12 series ended in a split however as the Mastodons defeated IUPUI 59-50 at the Gates Sports Center during the first meeting.
The first ever meeting between these two programs was played during the 1979-80 season. The Mastodons lost at home by the final score of 52-60. The 'Dons have had recent success under head coach Chris Paul when playing IUPUI. The teams split the series in 2008-09, but IPFW swept IUPUI during both the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

SUMMIT LEAGUE SEASON BEGINS THIS WEEKEND
Following seven weeks of non-league play, Summit League play begins this weekend with six teams in action on Friday. League-leading and newcomer Omaha travels to Kansas City to take on the Kangaroos in it's first-ever league contest. Western Illinois travels to Oakland in a battle between top-five teams in the league standings, while IUPUI plays at Fort Wayne. Sunday's action is highlighted by the national broadcast between North Dakota State and South Dakota State in Brookings. The game will be featured nationally on Fox College Sports Pacific and regionally on Midco Sports Net. In other action on Sunday, IUPUI is at Oakland, Western Illinois plays at Fort Wayne and Omaha takes on South Dakota in Vermillion.
HYDE SCORES 43 AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
Amanda Hyde scored a career-high 43 points in a 78-65 win over Southern Illinois. The 43 points placed her in a tie for second all-time in Summit League history, and also tied the IPFW school record for most points in a game.
43 points puts Hyde in a tie for the highest single-game total in NCAA Division I this season. Shareta Brown of Detroit scored 43 against Lourdes on Dec. 10. Other student-athlete to score more than 40 include Amy Patton of Northern Arizona who scored 41 points against Bradley on Nov. 24 and Kevi Luper of Oral Roberts who dropped 40 points against Missouri State on Nov. 29.

SINGLE-GAME INDIVIDUAL POINTS RECORD
Amanda Hyde tied Lindy Jones for a share of the IPFW single-game scoring record. Jones scored 43 points against St. Joseph's during the 1995-96 season. Other Mastodons to reach 40 points in a game include Jamie Holderman and Lisa Miller. Holderman scored 40 against Quincy on Feb. 17, 2001 and Miller recorded her 40 point game against IUPUI on Jan. 23, 1992.
OFF TO A FAST START
It is important for IPFW to find their offense early as the Mastodons are 4-1 when leading at the half compared to 0-7 when they trail. Rebounding against the Jaguars will also be important as the Mastodons are 4-1 when they outrebound their opponents.
SUMMIT LEAGUE LEADER
Junior Amanda Hyde leads the Summit League with a scoring average of 18.8 points per game. Hyde scored 192 points through the first 10 games of the season and most recently dropped 15 points against Rochester.
MAUK MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Stefanie Mauk exploded for 20 points and 15 rebounds against Rochester on Dec. 22. The junior stuffs the box score with points, rebounds, steals, and blocks. Mauk leads the team by pulling down 7.7 rebounds per game. She has led the team in rebounds eight times, in steals six times, and in blocks four times.
UP NEXT
IPFW will host Western Illinois on Sunday, Dec. 30. The game will be last contest played during 2012 as the next game will be on the road at Omaha on Jan. 5.
