IPFW Looks to Even League Record vs Western Illinois

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW women's basketball team will face Western Illinois on Sunday, Dec. 30 at the Gates Sports Center. The Mastodons are currently 0-1 in Summit League play after losing to IUPUI, but the 'Dons will look to get back on track with a win against the Leathernecks.
ABOUT IPFW
IPFW jumped out to an early lead against IUPUI and held a 46-39 advantage at the half, but it wasn't enough as IUPUI defeated the Mastodons 79-74. IPFW shot 30 percent from the floor in the second half including 8 percent (1-for-12) from three-point range.
Amanda Hyde increased her points per game average to 19.7 after dropping 30 on the Jaguars on Friday night. Hyde leads the Summit League in scoring and has reached a double figure scoring total in 12 of 13 games this season.
Erin Murphy also stepped her game up scoring a season-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting against IUPUI. Murphy added two rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 22 minutes of action.
SCOUTING THE LEATHERNECKS
Western Illinois went on the road to defeat Oakland 81-73 in their Summit League opener. The Leathernecks now hold an overall record of 7-5 after winning six of their last seven contests. Saule Kontautaite leads the team in scoring with a points per game average of 15.8. She is shooting 44 percent from the floor and 32 percent from behind the arc.
Kontautaite scored a game-high 24 points against Oakland in 38 minutes of action. The Leathernecks had four student-athletes reach double figure scoring as Ashley Luke (16) Michelle Maher (11) and Rebecca Henricson (10) also impacted the Western Illinois offense.
Western Illinois shot 53 percent from the floor at Oakland and 55 percent from 3-point range. The Leathernecks connected on 11 of their 20 3-point field goal attempts as Kontautaite led the way with a 4-for-8 performance.
Kontautaite scored a game-high 24 points against Oakland in 38 minutes of action. The Leathernecks had four student-athletes reach double figure scoring as Ashley Luke (16) Michelle Maher (11) and Rebecca Henricson (10) also impacted the Western Illinois offense.
Western Illinois shot 53 percent from the floor at Oakland and 55 percent from 3-point range. The Leathernecks connected on 11 of their 20 3-point field goal attempts as Kontautaite led the way with a 4-for-8 performance.
LAST TIME OUT
IPFW held a 46-39 lead at the half, but poor shooting during the final 20 minutes of the game turned out to be the difference as IUPUI knocked off IPFW by the final score of 79-74. The Jaguars are now 1-0 in league play which puts IPFW at 0-1.

IPFW shot 62 percent from the floor in the opening half, but that percentage dropped to just 30 percent during the final twenty minutes. The 3-point shooting was also off as IPFW was just 1-for-12 from distance down the stretch.
The 'Dons jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the contest as Hyde scored six of the team's first eight points. IPFW pushed their lead to 14 points with just over eight minutes remaining, but IUPUI would chip away at the deficit and cut the lead to seven at the break after a layup by Demetri Nunley-Lash.
A seven-point halftime lead quickly shrank to a three point cushion as IUPUI scored the first four points of the second half. The momentum of the game shifted after an old fashion 3-point play from Jordan Barton gave IUPUI a 54-53 lead with 12:04 remaining. Goss pushed the IUPUI lead to 63-55 with a layup just three minutes later and IPFW burned a timeout.
Hyde got to the rim after the pause in the action and got to the free throw line on multiple trips helping IPFW climb back into the game. The score would be tied at 65-65 after a pair of free throws.
The final tie of the game came at 70-70 after a free throw from Clara Mitchell. The Jaguars sealed the win on the high play of Katie Comello down the stretch. Comello stole a pass and scored a layup to break the tie. After a free throw from Erin Murphy, it was Comello again with a 3-point dagger from the corner giving IUPUI a 75-71 edge. Free throws from Nunley-Lash gave the Jags a six point lead, but Hyde cut that in half with a 3-pointer with just 12 seconds to play. Comello iced the game soon after as her free throws gave IUPUI the 79-74 win.
Each team shot a high percentage from the floor as IUPUI ended the game 54 percent compared to 48 percent from IPFW. Each team had a hard time with turnovers on Friday as the Jags committed 27 next to IPFW's 25.

THREE-POINT STREAK
The IPFW Mastodons have made a 3-point field goal in 418 straight contests, a stretch that ranks as the fourth longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Iowa State's streak is at the top of the list by making a 3-point field goal in 556 consecutive games. Sam Houston State and Connecticut rank ahead of IPFW with 510 and 483 respectively.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The series between IPFW and Western Illinois originally started once the Mastodons joined the Summit League during the 2007-08 season. IPFW holds a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series as the team split during the 2007-08 season, the 2009-10 season, and most recently a year ago during the 2011-12 season.

The 08-09 season was a clean sweep for IPFW, but Western Illinois took a 58-55 overtime win over IPFW in 2009-10. The 'Dons had won the previous matchup that season by the final score of 62-46. FOUL TROUBLE
The Mastodons were forced to make some changes on Friday night due to some early foul trouble. Haley Seibert was limited to just 16 minutes of action after picking up her fourth personal foul early in the second half. Amanda Hyde and Erin Murphy were also restricted as Hyde eventually fouled out of the game and Murphy was hit with four early fouls. The entire starting five heard the whistle frequently as Stefanie Mauk ended the game with four and her sister, Rachel recorded three.
SUMMIT LEAGUE LEADER
Junior Amanda Hyde leads the Summit League with a scoring average of 19.7 points per game. She most recently dropped 30 points against IUPUI in the Summit League opener.
MAUK MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Stefanie Mauk exploded for 20 points and 15 rebounds against Rochester on Dec. 22. The junior stuffs the box score with points, rebounds, steals, and blocks. Mauk leads the team and is fourth in the Summit League with a rebound average of 7.4.
UP NEXT
IPFW will play at Omaha after the New Year holiday to face the Mavericks on Saturday, Jan. 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
