FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW women's basketball team will host the Valparaiso Crusaders on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Tip-off from the Gates Sports Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
Valparaiso got off to a 2-0 start to the 2012-13 regular season, but has followed that effort by losing five-straight as the Crusaders enter Tuesday night's contest against IPFW with an overall record of 2-5. Valpo defeated Indiana in the season opener 64-52, and then improved to 2-0 with a 76-59 victory over Purdue Calumet.
Four out of Valparaiso's last five games have been on the road as losses at IUPUI (69-75) and at Butler (55-69) started the losing streak. The Crusaders visited Cameron Indoor Stadium on Nov. 23 to face No. 4 Duke and the Blue Devils recorded a 90-45 win to improve to 3-0. Valpo lost 55-69 at Western Illinois and most recently took a 47-53 loss at home to Saint Louis.
Tabitha Gerardot leads the team in scoring with an average of 12.3 points per game and in rebounds with 7.9 per contest. Nearly every player on the team has recorded an assist as Valparaiso ranks 84th in the nation with 14.4 assists per game. Charae Richardson leads the team with an average of 3.7 per contest. The Crusaders also defend the 3-point line as well as anyone in the country as they currently rank fifth in the nation in 3-point field goal defense. The 'Dons have hit a 3-point field goal in 411 consecutive games so that will be one area for fans to focus on.
LAST TIME OUT
Behind a school-record-tying 43 points from junior Amanda Hyde, the IPFW Mastodons held on for a 78-65 victory over the Southern Illinois Salukis in a rare mid-day, mid-week match-up.
Hyde ended the game shooting 16-of-26 from the field, 3-of-5 from three, and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. She scored 21 points in the first half, and bettered that with 22 in the second. The 26 shot attempts are the fourth-highest single-game total, while the 16 makes ties for the second-highest.
The 43 points are also the highest single-game total in NCAA Division I this season, and are tied for the second-most in a game in Summit League history, behind only the 44 put up by Oral Roberts' Kevi Luper against LaSalle in 2009-10. The total puts her in a tie with Brianne Kenneally of Youngstown State who scored 43 against Georgia State in 2000-01, and Kansas City's Dayon Hall-Jones who scored 43 against Oral Roberts last season.
Haley Seibert added 10 points, while Stefanie Mauk pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds, as IPFW out-rebounded the Salukis 41-36 in the contest. Seibert dished out five assists, while Hyde gave out four.
IPFW (3-3) never trailed in the game, as Hyde scored the team's first eight points, pushing the visitors ahead 8-4. Southern Illinois cut the gap to 10-8 with 16:22 to play in the first half, before the Mastodons reeled off 12 straight points over a nearly five-minute span to push the IPFW advantage to a 14-point, 22-8 lead.
The margin never reached single digits for the rest of the half, despite the Salukis cutting the gap to 13 at 37-24 with 3:33 left in the opening half, but would not score again, as IPFW closed the opening stanza with four points in the final three and a half minutes to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The IPFW advantage remained double-digit until late in the game, when the hosts cut the gap to as few as seven with 4:08 to play at 68-61; however, the Mastodons out-scored the Salukis 10-4 the rest of the way to claim the 13-point victory.
3-POINT STREAK
The IPFW Mastodons have made a 3-point field goal in 411 straight contests, a stretch that ranks as the fourth longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Iowa State's streak is at the top of the list by making a 3-point field goal in 553 consecutive games.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Valparaiso leads the all-time series over IPFW 9-5. The first contest between the two programs was played during the 1976-77 season and the most recent was last year with the Crusaders taking a 64-43 victory at home.
HYDE SCORES 43 AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
Amanda Hyde scored a career-high 43 points last week as the Mastodons recorded their third win of the season by defeating Southern Illinois 78-65. The 43 points placed her in a tie for second all-time in Summit League history, and also tied the IPFW school record for most points in a game.
43 points are the highest single-game total in NCAA Division I this season as Hyde becomes the third student-athlete to score more than 40. Amy Patton of Northern Arizona scored 41 points against Bradley on Nov. 24 and Kevi Luper of Oral Roberts dropped 40 points against Missouri State on Nov. 29.
Hyde has reached double figure scoring in all six games this season. Her 43-point game against Southern Illinois increased her scoring average to 19.5 ppg which ranks her 34th in the NCAA.
SINGLE-GAME INDIVIDUAL POINTS RECORD
Amanda Hyde tied Lindy Jones for a share of the IPFW single-game scoring record. Jones scored 43 points against St. Joseph's during the 1995-96 season. Other Mastodons to reach 40 points in a game include Jamie Holderman and Lisa Miller. Holderman scored 40 against Quincy on Feb. 17, 2001 and Miller recorded her 40 point game against IUPUI on Jan. 23, 1992.
CRASH THE BOARDS
Junior Stefanie Mauk set a new career-high rebound total with 14 against Southern Illinois on Nov. 29. Mauk is now averaging 8.2 rebounds per contest which leads the team.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The 2012-13 IPFW women's basketball roster does not have a single senior on the team. Three juniors and a pair of sophomores create the starting five for the Mastodons.
SUMMIT LEAGUE SCHEDULE
The Summit League schedule is quickly approaching as the Mastodons will host IUPUI and Western Illinois to open up league play. A quick trip to Omaha will be the first game for IPFW in 2013 and then the Mastodons will return home for games against North Dakota State and South Dakota State.
UP NEXT
