FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW women's basketball team is preparing for their third game this week as they travel to Edwardsville, Ill. to take on the Cougars of SIU Edwardsville. The 'Dons faced SIUE at home earlier this season as the Cougars escaped with a 74-67 win at the Gates Sports Center.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
SIU Edwardsville is 5-4 overall through the first nine games of the 2012-13 season. The Cougars are currently on a two-game winning streak after defeating Southern U and Sacramento St. Raven Berry is averaging 12.9 points and nine rebounds per game for SIUE. She leads the team in each category. Berry scored 23 points and pulled down 16 rebounds against IPFW in the first meeting of the year.
Joining Berry as impact players on the SIUE roster are guards Austin Tierny Courtney Kenner. Tierny is the second highest scorer on the team with a points per game average of 11.2 points. She also chips in with 5.7 rebounds per game. Kenner is a senior that only averages 5.3 points but she leads the team in assists and steals.
LAST TIME OUT
Purdue used a 12-0 run to start the first half, and an 11-2 run to open the second stanza as the Boilermakers defeated IPFW on Thursday night by the final score of 69-54. Amanda Hyde once again led IPFW with a game-high 26 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists, and a career-high five steals. Hyde and Haley Seibert each played 40 minutes against Purdue on Thursday as Seibert ended the night with nine points and three assists.
Purdue scored the first 12 points of the game, but IPFW never quit as the Mastodons cut the lead to 26-24 with less than one minute to play in the first half. The Boilermakers hit four-straight shots to start the game, including two from 3-point range to open up a 10-0 lead. A pair of free throws from Courtney Moses pushed the lead to 12-0.
A 3-point field goal from Seibert matched with a baseline jumper from Bruner cut the Purdue lead to 22-18, but the game got even more interesting after Bruner cut the lead to 24-22 with just over two minutes to play. IPFW never took the lead, but a transition layup by Hyde once again got the Mastodons within two points with under a minute to play in the first half. Courtney Moses buried a three from the corner as time expired and Purdue went into the half with a 31-24 lead
IPFW's first field goal of the second half came at the 13:22 mark as Haley Seibert hit a 3-pointer from the wing. Seibert answered with another triple on IPFW's next possession to cut the lead to 43-34. KK Houser made a transition layup midway through the half to open up a 49-36 edge and Moses followed with another fast break bucket which forced IPFW to burn a timeout.
Purdue increased their lead to 20 points after a field goal from Liza Clemons with just over six minutes remaining. IPFW struggled to find space in the second half as the first two-point field goal of the final twenty minutes came with 2:28 on the clock. The 'Dons hit three 3-point field goals and a handful of free throws to net their scoring total in the second half.
ALL-TIME SERIES
SIU Edwardsville increased their lead to 9-7 in the all-time series with IPFW with a 74-67 victory in the 2012-13 regular season opener. The Mastodons won the first four meetings between the two progams with the first game being played during the 1988-89 season. SIUE went on to dominate the series from 1996-1998 by winning five-straight against the Mastodons. IPFW came back to win three of four from 1999-2001, but the Cougars responded by winning three-straight from 2010-2012.
3-POINT STREAK
The IPFW Mastodons have made a 3-point field goal in 413 straight contests, a stretch that ranks as the fourth longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Iowa State's streak is at the top of the list by making a 3-point field goal in 554 consecutive games. Sam Houston State and Connecticut rank ahead of IPFW with 505 and 481 respectively.
HYDE SCORES 43 AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
Amanda Hyde scored a career-high 43 points in a win over Southern Illinois 78-65. The 43 points placed her in a tie for second all-time in Summit League history, and also tied the IPFW school record for most points in a game.
43 points are the highest single-game total in NCAA Division I this season as Hyde becomes the third student-athlete to score more than 40. Amy Patton of Northern Arizona scored 41 points against Bradley on Nov. 24 and Kevi Luper of Oral Roberts dropped 40 points against Missouri State on Nov. 29.
Hyde has reached double figure scoring in all eight games this season. Her 43-point game against Southern Illinois helped her increase her scoring average to 21.0 ppg which ranks her 34th in the NCAA.
SINGLE GAME INDIVIDUAL POINTS RECORD
Amanda Hyde tied Lindy Jones for a share of the IPFW single-game scoring record. Jones scored 43 points against St. Joseph's during the 1995-96 season. Other Mastodons to reach 40 points in a game include Jamie Holderman and Lisa Miller. Holderman scored 40 against Quincy on Feb. 17, 2001 and Miller recorded her 40 point game against IUPUI on Jan. 23, 1992.
UP NEXT
IPFW will play at Michigan State on Sunday, Dec. 16. The Mastodons have played the Spartans two times prior to this meeting with MSU coming out victorious in both contests.
