KANSAS CITY, Mo. - On Saturday afternoon the IPFW Mastodons and UMKC Kangaroos will face off in what will ammount to be a play-in game for the 2012 Summit League Tournament, as the winner will earn the eighth seed to the league tournament.

SCOUTING THE KANGAROOS
UMKC comes into Saturday's must-win game with a 10-20 overall record, and a 4-13 mark in league play. In the team's last game, an 89-56 loss to Oakland, the Grizzlies' Reggie Hamilton scored 31 points as Oakland jumped out to a 50-15 halftime lead and never looked back. Brad Reid scored a team-high 14 points off of the bench for the Kangaroos, while Nate Rogers scored 11, as team scoring leader Reggie Chamberlain scored just five.
On the year, Chamberlain paces the squad by averaging 17.0 points per game, while Trinity Hall is also in double-figures at 10.2. Two others, Kirk Korver (younger brother of Chicago Bull guard Kyle Korver) and Thomas Staton average 7.8 and 7.4 points per game, each.
The Kangaroos get out-rebounded by an average of 6.2 rebounds per game, and are led by Hall who pulls down 4.3 boards per contest. Estan Tyler has dished out a team-high 83 assists. Hall and Staten have each blocked 21 shots to lead the team, while Staten also leads the team with 49 steals.
SERIES vs. UMKC
Through ten games of the all-time series between IPFW and UMKC, the teams have split the ten games evenly, with each squad winning five, as the winner of Saturday's game will not only earn a berth into the postseason tournament, but will also take a lead in the all-time series between the teams.
EARLIER THIS SEASON AGAINST UMKC
The UMKC Kangaroos made 27-of-45 of its shots from the field (60 percent), topping IPFW 81-66 despite the Mastodons out-rebounding the guests by a 40-to-21 margin in the contest.
Frank Gaines, the country's sixth leading scorer at the time, poured in a game-high 22 points, while Trey McCorkle added 18. John Peckinpaugh scored seven for IPFW, while adding two assists and a game-high-tying two steals. Gaines pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, as Jonny Marlin dished out five assists.
The Mastodons seemed to take control of the game early, jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead, holding the 'Roos scoreless for nearly the first three minutes of the contest. the eight-point lead at 17:26 would be the largest of the game for IPFW. UMKC responded with the 8-0 run with a 7-0 streak of its own, but could not get over the hump and take a lead until Kirk Korver hit a jumper with 10:24 on the first-half clock, giving the 'Roos an 18-17 lead.

According to the latest NCAA Statistical rankings (2/19/12), IPFW junior Frank Gaines currently ranks 11th in the country in points per game, averaging 20.8 per contest. He has reached the 20-point plateau in 17 of the team's 28 games this season, including scoring a career-high 30 points against Western Illinois on January 7, at Oakland on February 11, at Eastern Kentucky on February 18, and at South Dakota on February 23. In all, the Summit League has five scorers inside of the top-15 overall, with Oakland's Reggie Hamilton leading the nation. There are also 18 players currently averaging over 20 points per game, over one quarter of those coming from the Summit League.
