Mastodons Lead at Half, but Fall 76-62 at IUPUI
2/4/2012 6:08:00 PM | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The women's basketball team took a 33-28 lead into halftime, but a great second half from Emily Phillips changed the momentum as the Jaguars defeated IPFW by the final score of 76-62.
IPFW got off to a good start and led by as many as 10 points in the opening half. The 'Dons shot 44 percent from the floor to start the game, but the high percentage would not carry over as they ended the game at 38 percent.
Emily Phillips and Kerah Nelson provided a one-two punch for the IUPUI offense. Nelson was consistent in scoring her game-high 23 points, but Phillips found her shot in the second half scoring all 17 of her points in the final 20 minutes of play.
Another key element in Saturday afternoon's loss to IUPUI was the rebound total. The Jaguars grabbed 45 rebounds, including 16 on the offensive end. That allowed IUPUI to rack up 23 second chance points compared to just eight for IPFW.
Stephanie Rosado put in a solid 29 minutes for IPFW. She ended the game with a team-high 14 points and six rebounds. Joining Rosado in double figure scoring was Anne Boese and Erin Murphy. Boese hit three shots from distance and tacked on a layup for her 11 points, while Murphy provided the bench with a spark going for 12.
The Mastodons got into foul trouble against IUPUI. Stefanie Mauk fouled out of the contest while Boese and Sarah Haluska held on with four personals each. Amanda Hyde also had a stretch of time on the sideline as she also picked up three early fouls.
The foul total ended up hurting IPFW as the Jaguars connected on 26 of their 34 free throw attempts. Nelson was the best option for IUPUI hitting 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.
IPFW will remain on the road with an away game against Western Illinois on Monday, February, 6. Tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
