Cal Baptist Holds Off IPFW in Five Sets

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Three Mastodons recorded double-double performances, but the Cal Baptist Lancers pulled through late in contest to down IPFW in five sets at the Active Ankle Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
Eddie Rivera led IPFW with 14 kills and game-high 15 digs, while Ivan Matos had 15 kills and 10 digs. Omar Rivera dished 46 assists and totaled 10 digs. The team managed a .187 hitting-percentage on Saturday.
The loss drops IPFW to 10-8 this season, while Cal Baptist wins its seventh-straight match and improves to 10-13. The all-time series between the two programs is now knotted at 2-2.
After falling in the first set 25-19, IPFW responded in set two by jumping out to a 5-2 lead and held it to18-13. The Lancers answered back and tied the score at 22-22, before a kill from Bryan Saunders put the 'Dons up by one at 23-22. Two Lancer attack errors followed, giving IPFW the set two win, 25-22.
Cal Baptist took the third frame 25-20 after taking the lead at 18-17 and earning the set's final two points off Don attack errors.
Down 2-1, the Mastodons earned earlier kills from E. Rivera and Saunders to move in front 6-3 early in the fourth set. The Lancers gained the lead at 7-6 and stormed ahead by as many as seven at 19-12. However, points from Matos and Ramon Burgos brought the visitors back to even the game at 23-23. A Corey Frain kill, followed by Lancer attack errors gave IPFW the victory, 25-23, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
In the final frame, the 'Dons had the 5-1 early lead, before Cal Baptist pulled in front 8-7, and never gave up the advantage. Despite a late Mastodon run, the Lancers earned one final kill from Aaron McCalmont on match point to win, 15-13.
The Mastodons will return home for a double-header weekend against MIVA-opponent Grand Canyon on March 16-17. Both contests begin at 7:00 p.m. EST.
