IPFW Downs NJIT in Three Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's volleyball team came out firing in the first set and never looked back against NJIT on Friday evening, blanking the Highlanders 3-0 at the Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
IPFW improves to 9-6 (2-2 MIVA) this season with the impressive home win. The Mastodons have won back-to-back contests. NJIT falls to 6-9 with the road loss. IPFW is now a perfect 9-0 all-time against NJIT.
After opening the night with a 25-19 first set win, the two teams battled for points early in the second frame, before the Mastodons pulled ahead at 11-10. Elon Fyfield and Eddie Rivera followed with a pair of kills to put the 'Dons up comfortably 19-14. On set point, Omar Rivera tossed a pass to Corey Frain, who blasted a kill to give IPFW set two, 25-22.
In the third and would be final frame, the teams again traded points up to 8-8, when NJIT committed an attack error to give IPFW a one-point lead at 9-8. At 12-9 in favor of the Mastodons, Ivan Matos recorded a kill, which began a 9-4 'Don run to take the score to 21-13. When IPFW earned match point, Highlander Dhruv Lad misplaced a pass and forced an attack error to hand IPFW the final set 25-18.
Fyfield paced IPFW with 12 kills on 22 attempts, while Matos blasted nine. O. Rivera notched 32 assists in the victory. As a unit, the Mastodons recorded a .351 hitting-percentage against NJIT.
The two teams will return to the court tomorrow evening on March 3 to wrap-up the weekend doubleheader. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
