#6 Lewis Flies Past IPFW in Romeoville

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Behind by a high-powered offensive effort, the #6 Lewis Flyers stormed out to early leads in each of the first three sets enroute to a 3-0 win over IPFW on Friday evening in Romeoville, Ill.
IPFW falls to 10-11 (2-5 MIVA) and drops its fifth-straight match with the loss. Lewis improves to 19-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference with the home win. The Flyers now lead the all-time seres 25-22.
In the opening set, Ramon Burgos and Corey Frain started the IPFW offense with kills from the middle spot to put IPFW up a point at 4-3. On the following play, Lewis blasted a kill, and jumped ahead by as many as seven at 16-9, forcing the Mastodons to call a timeout. Out of the break, Burgos and Elon Fyfield tagged kills, as did Anthony Randolph, bringing the visitors back within four at 18-14. The home team came out firing after calling a timeout, earning a trio of kills from Ian Karbiener to hand the Flyers the first set, 25-17.
Lewis continued its consistent play in the second game, moving ahead 9-1, as Flyer Greg Petty earned two early kills in the set. Points from Burgos and Frain halted a 8-2 Flyer run, but it didn't stop Lewis from building its lead. With G. Petty and Karbiener attacking aggressively, the Flyers moved ahead by 10 at 16-6, then to set point 24-11. On the final play, the Mastodons took the serve and netted a service error, giving Lewis set two 25-12.
The teams traded points out of intermission, as Eddie Rivera powered two kills to bring set to 4-4. Tied at 11-11, back-to-back 'Don errors moved Lewis in front by two, then four at 19-15. A kill from Rob Samp pulled the Mastodons with three at 21-18, but a late offensive outbreak led by the Petty brothers clinched the fifth set for Lewis, 25-22.
E. Rivera posted seven kills and five digs to lead IPFW. Omar Rivera had 27 assists. The Mastodons recorded a .155 hitting-percentage against the Flyers (.384).
IPFW will now head to Kenosha, Wis. to face Carthage on Saturday, March 24. First serve is slated for 8:00 p.m. EST.
