OXFORD, Ohio - With a goal from Danielle Bishop with 2:31 remaining in the second overtime, the IPFW Mastodons upset regionally ranked Miami (Ohio) on Friday evening by a 1-0 score.
The RedHawks, who fall to 5-2 on the season, were ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region according to the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, just behind Ohio State and ahead of Northwestern, a team that Miami had fallen to earlier in the year.
The shutout win was also the first of the young career of freshman goalkeeper Sam Pavlika, who has given up exactly one goal in each of her previous five games, and dropped her season goals against average to 0.81 with the shutout.
IPFW, which evened its record at 3-3 on the year, had its 11th straight game against a team from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) that was decided by just one goal.
The Mastodons were held to just one first-half shot - compared to 10 from Miami - while the RedHawks also totaled 10 in the second half, and one in each overtime period for 22 total shots. IPFW added six second-half shots, all of which came up empty, and 10 for the entire game.
Neither team could muster much offense in the first overtime period, each team having one attempt, IPFW's on goal from Bishop that was saved by Miami goalkeeper Allison Norenberg.
The second overtime period started with three corner kicks in quick succession; however, there was just one shot among the mix, a header attempt from defender Amber Lawrence.
A blocked shot by Miami was the only attempt the RedHawks would have, and it set up a counter by the Mastodons, scoring when freshman Rachel Good found Bishop with a cross that Bishop headed past Norenberg for the game-winning goal.
Bishop is one of three Mastodons with a game-winning goal this season, and is the fourth goal in her career.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, September 16 with a non-conference meeting with Valparaiso University in a game that is also the program's first annual Food Drive.
