BOX SCORE (.pdf)
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Three Mastodons reached double-figures in kills, as IPFW and Sacred Heart switched back-and-forth, set-for-set, with the 'Dons prevailing 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-10).
Bryan Saunders and Ramon Burgos each had 11 kills for IPFW, as Kevin Villela added 10. Saunders hit a .579 percentage on the night (11 kills, 0 errors, 19 attempts), while Villela hit .444 (10 kills, 2 errors, 18 attempts), and Burgos .364 (11 kills, 3 errors, 22 attempts).
Omar Rivera dished out 45 assists, while picking up 11 digs for the team's first double-double of the season. He and Andy Sellan each had two aces to tie for the game-high, while Saunders and Burgos had five and four blocks, respectively.
The opening frame saw IPFW (2-1) jump ahead to a 6-2 lead, forcing a Sacred Heart timeout. The Mastodons would not trail again in the set, as the hosts would only climb to within as few as three the rest of the way as IPFW cruised to a 25-18 opening-set win.
IPFW led only at 1-0 in the second set and were tied at 16 apiece, but the early lead would be the only one for the remainder of the game; however, Sacred Heart (0-2) would only lead by as many as five in the set.
The third set saw the Mastodons lead wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 7-3 lead early, and the margin never dipped below three the rest of the way as IPFW cruised to the third-set win.
Sacred Heart sprinted out in the fourth set, leading 5-1, as the hosts cruised to a 25-16 win, setting up a winner-take-all fifth and final set.
In the deciding set, IPFW pushed ahead early at 4-1 and never trailed, leading by as many as six, sprinting to the finish of the match with a 15-10 fifth-set win.
Eddie Rivera added nine kills, while Sellan, the defending MIVA Offensive Player of the Week, had six. As a team the Mastodons hit .266 (53 kills, 20 errors, 124 attempts), and had five service aces and 10 total blocks.
Sacred Heart put four players in double-figure kills, led by Brad Borsay who had 16, while Jason Kinney added 15.
The Mastodons remain on the east coast for a battle tomorrow night at NJIT with a 7 p.m. first serve in Newark, N.J.
